This unit also oversees the administration of all college retirement programs, including defined benefit plans, defined contribution plans and supplemental retirement plans. This office also administers the Educational Assistance Plan (EAP) and tuition waiver benefits for employees and their eligible dependents. Currently the college offers 3 medical plans, 2 dental plans, life insurance, long-term disability, optional life insurance, spousal life insurance, dependent life insurance, group legal plan, long-term care insurance and a supplemental vision plan. The college offers six retirement plans (based on eligibility) and various supplemental retirement plans. All college employees (with the exception of students) are eligible to participate in supplemental retirement plans. Staff members in the Benefits unit who can assist you with your inquiry are Karen Bass, Human Resources Manager, Suzanne Redding, Human Resources Specialist, and Paula Hadzima, Human Resources Associate. # # # Karen Bass Karen Bass, Human Resources Manager, has been with the College for 12 years. She is responsible for overseeing the group insurance program that is available to 1,797 employees and 550 retirees. This includes conducting annual review of college benefits and negotiating with vendors and overseeing the EAP and tuition waiver benefits. Additionally she administers several defined benefit retirement plans, defined contribution plans, and supplemental retirement plans. She meets with potential retirees to discuss retirement benefits that are available to College employees. Karen is a Certified Professional by the International Public Management Association for Human Resources. She graduated from St. Mary's College of Maryland with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science and obtained her Graduate Degree, a Master of Science, Human Resources Management, from the University of Maryland University College. Karen has over 18 years of experience working in Human Resources. Karen can be reached at Karen.bass@montgomerycollege.edu or at 240-567-5359. # # # Suzanne Redding Suzanne Redding, Human Resources Specialist, has been with the College for nine years, and has a total of 14 years of benefits experience. She is responsible for providing information to college employees and retirees concerning all types of benefits. She also helps facilitate new staff orientations, manages employee deductions in Banner, counsels prospective retirees, and handles the EAP for Montgomery College classes, as well as the tuition waiver for employees and dependents. Suzanne holds an A.A. from Montgomery College (with honors), and a B.S. from the University of Maryland, College Park. She has also earned the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) designation from the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She is responsible for tackling benefits questions, complaints and concerns from the college staff and faculty. Additionally, she processes employee retirement plan applications and salary reduction agreements. She helps deliver monthly new staff orientations pertaining to benefits, answers staff questions via the Inside MC online AskHr feature and enters employee deductions in Banner. Paula holds an Associate's of Science degree in Occupational Therapy and a Bachelor's of Science degree. Hailed by <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/aug/23/the-memory-police-yoko-ogawa-review" target="_blank">The Guardian</a> as, "a masterpiece, meditating on totalitarianism and resistance as well as the rhythms of life and death," The Memory Police will spark rich discussions on the themes of memory, loss, and individual autonomy. Our first meeting will take place in late September. Those interested in joining the Book Club can e-mail Yvonne Hu-Cotto, Michelle Chan, and/or Nghi Nguyen. We will meet every two weeks, covering about five chapters at each meeting. The AANHPI Book Club reads books written by Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) authors. The AANHPI experience is a living, breathing, and evolving culture that deserves its own study. We will learn, understand, and attempt to define the AANHPI experience through the reading and discussions of these books. Previous selections include Pachinko by Min Jin Lee (FA25) and My Year Abroad by Chang Rae-Lee (SP26). Discover How MC's Assessment Centers Can Help You.The Assessment and Testing Centers, in collaboration with Center for Teaching and Learning, is offering an online workshop on using the testing services at Montgomery College. Faculty members who expect to use the Assessment and Testing Centers for in-person testing are invited to attend. The workshop will focus on RegisterBlast, the platform faculty will use to submit, edit, and retrieve their tests and students will use to make their testing appointments. Tips will be shared to facilitate a seamless testing process and a positive experience for faculty and students. Staff will be ready to answer questions from individual faculty members. We will also share resources on using HonorLock, the third-party service for online proctoring. We hope to see you!
