Soap Drive for Haiti!

Category: College/Campus News

Published: Feb 7 2011 12:00AM

One year after the Haiti earthquake, the country is still struggling.

According to the Washington Post:

Only five percent of the rubble from the crushed buildings has been cleared

Hundreds of thousands of Haitians are still living in unclean and/or unsafe tents

There has been a deadly outbreak of the cholera infection, with over 3,000 deaths to date and thousands more expected.

Cholera can be prevented with a simple bar of soap. Soap costs about 50 cents, but many Haitians live on less than $1.25 a day, and cannot afford it.
To help the survivors still living in Haiti, Montgomery College HERO club will be conducting a Hope & Soap for Haiti collection drive. The Hope & Soap for Haiti campaign was initiated by a local group called "MoverMoms," which is working with the NGO Humanity First to transport and distribute all of the supplies collected. The HERO club is collecting ANY KIND OF BAR SOAP (NOT LIQUID SOAP). Drop items off in the marked box in the entrance to the Student Services (ST) building or in the Health Sciences (HC) building.

If you want to send soap through interdepartmental mail, send it to Lucy Vitaliti in the Office of Service Learning at Takoma Park/Silver Spring.

Thanks for your support!
