Principles of Chemistry I is a gateway course for health-related, engineering, and science majors. Historically, an average of only about 55% of students complete the course with a grade of &#34;C&#34; or above. In addition, more than 21% of students who initially enroll withdraw entirely from the course.&#13;&#10;&#13;&#10;Across the country, institutions have developed solutions to combat rising dropout rates and to bolster student completion. The College will be modeling its chemistry redesign on North Carolina State University&#39;s teaching technique called SCALE-UP, which the school introduced to benefit its physics courses. North Carolina State University demonstrated significant improvements in student success and a decrease in the number of students withdrawing from a course as a result of this instructional style. At MC, Physics Associate Professor Dr. Nawal Benmouna has been using SCALE-UP in her PH 203 sections since fall of 2009 with encouraging results. The SCALE-UP approach is now used for instruction in all science disciplines and mathematics as well as in the humanities. &#13;&#10;&#13;&#10;The redesign of CH 101 will involve chemistry faculty from each MC campus, the course structure and will be piloted in the fall 2011 and spring 2012 semesters. If successfully piloted, the redesigned course will be implemented in all sections collegewide beginning in the fall 2012 semester.</story_body><attached_files><attachmentcount>1</attachmentcount><attached_file><file><rawname>PH203_tangibles2.jpg</rawname><href>attach/9da44ab1-3bbe-8b14-4d03-df30eac0108f/PH203_tangibles2.jpg</href></file><thumbnail><rawname>tn_0.jpg</rawname><href>attach/9da44ab1-3bbe-8b14-4d03-df30eac0108f/tn_0.jpg</href></thumbnail><caption>Students conduct experiments in a PH 203 General Physics I.</caption></attached_file></attached_files><display_image><rawname>PH203_tangibles2.jpg</rawname><href>attach/9da44ab1-3bbe-8b14-4d03-df30eac0108f/PH203_tangibles2.jpg</href></display_image><category_name>Other (Do Not Use)</category_name><submitter_email>chelsea.waugaman@montgomerycollege.edu</submitter_email><submitter_phone>240-567-4098</submitter_phone><story_summary>Montgomery College has been awarded a $20,000 grant from the Lumina Foundation and the University of Maryland System for the redesign of the College&#39;s first-semester general chemistry course, CH 101 Principles of Chemistry I.</story_summary><root_parent_rcdid>25525</root_parent_rcdid>	<nice-publish-date>Monday, February 21, 2011</nice-publish-date>

For students who may not have reliable access to a personal computer, a loaned laptop can be the difference between simply getting by and truly excelling in their coursework.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;We encourage faculty to share this valuable resource with students, especially those who may be facing technology challenges. A simple recommendation from a trusted faculty member can go a long way in connecting students to resources that support their success.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Please note that the number of laptops available is limited and requests are processed based on availability&#60;/strong&#62;. Students are encouraged to apply as early as possible to maximize their chances of receiving a loaner device for the semester.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Students can learn more about eligibility requirements and submit a request by visiting: &#60;a href=&#34;https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/academics/support/learning-centers/laptop-lending-program/index.html&#34;&#62;https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/academics/support/learning-centers/laptop-lending-program/index.html&#60;/a&#62;&#60;a href=&#34;https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/academics/support/learning-centers/laptop-lending-program/index.html&#34;&#62;&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;The Laptop Lending Program is managed by the Digital Learning Center whose mission is to empower students through digital literacy, technology access, and academic support. By providing equitable access to technology, we are helping students develop the skills, confidence, and resources they need to reach their full potential.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Together, we can ensure every student has the tools they need to succeed - both inside and outside the classroom!&#60;/strong&#62;&#60;/p&#62;</story_body><attached_files><attachmentcount>1</attachmentcount><attached_file><file><rawname>MClaptoplendingprogram.png</rawname><href>attach/969ecbf0-b152-9294-d1dc-315885b2bc0b/MClaptoplendingprogram.png</href></file><thumbnail><rawname>tn_0.png</rawname><href>attach/969ecbf0-b152-9294-d1dc-315885b2bc0b/tn_0.png</href></thumbnail><caption>MC Laptop Lending Program</caption></attached_file></attached_files><display_image><rawname>di_0.png</rawname><href>attach/969ecbf0-b152-9294-d1dc-315885b2bc0b/di_0.png</href></display_image><category_name>College News</category_name><featured_story>0</featured_story><show_display_picture>1</show_display_picture><display_order_in_category>20</display_order_in_category><story_summary/>

Inside the planetarium, located in the Catherine and Isiah Leggett Math and Science Building on the TP/SS campus, we are able to simulate the night sky including planets, nebulae, galaxies, and a host of celestial objects and imagery. We aim to bring free immersive, educational, and interactive programming to all.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Free tickets for all programs &#60;b&#62;must be reserved in advance&#60;/b&#62; at the Planetarium at Montgomery College&#39;s UBMe events page: &#60;a href=&#34;https://www.ubme.com/39923~carriefitz&#34;&#62;https://www.ubme.com/39923~carriefitz&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Planetarium Shows on &#60;strong&#62;Friday, September 4&#60;/strong&#62;:&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;ul&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;li&#62;Messengers of Time and Space - 7 p.m.&#60;/li&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;/ul&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Explore the dynamic cosmos and witness how data shapes the way we understand the Universe. This show highlights how the &#60;a href=&#34;https://www.gemini.edu/&#34; target=&#34;_self&#34;&#62;International Gemini Observatory&#60;/a&#62; will work together with observatories that monitor the night sky for exciting astronomical events that change with time. Sometimes, light is not the only indicator of these short-term events; information can reach us through other messengers like cosmic rays, elusive particles called neutrinos, and even gravitational waves rippling through the Universe.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Recommended for ages 10+.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;ul&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;li&#62;Under Our Sky - 8 p.m.&#60;/li&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;/ul&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Join us for a LIVE tour of tonight&#39;s night sky, including constellations, planets, and nebulas you can spot right here in Takoma Park. Then, explore beyond what our eyes can see by combining the power of electromagnetic radiation, enormous telescopes, and the planetarium theater to travel beyond our Solar System.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Recommended for ages 6+.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Questions? During his sophomore season, Montgomery College advanced to the NJCAA National Championship, where the Raptors defeated the nation&#39;s No. 1-ranked team. The team finished the season, ranked among the top 10 in the country. &#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Finding Opportunity &#60;/strong&#62;&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;At Montgomery College, Nico found more than a soccer team. He found a community. &#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#34;Montgomery College has such an incredible environment,&#34; he said. &#34;You walk around campus and you see people from everywhere in the world.&#34; &#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;His advice? Your GPA matters just as much as your game. &#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#34;If you have a good year with a good GPA, you&#39;re going to have the opportunity to go somewhere big.&#34; &#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Want the Full Story? &#60;/strong&#62;&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Nico is featured in &#60;a href=&#34;https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/offices/advancement-and-community-engagement/mctv/podcasts/beyond-the-classroom/index.html&#34; target=&#34;_self&#34; title=&#34;Episode 3&#34;&#62;Episode 3&#60;/a&#62; of Beyond the Classroom, Montgomery College&#39;s podcast about real student journeys. He has earned numerous degrees and certifications in education, math, and technology.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Vega joined the College in 2023. He teaches a number of computer science courses through the Computer Science and Technologies Department on the Rockville campus. They include Computer Concepts, System Analysis and Design, and Introduction to Scripting.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Vega is originally from Puerto Rico. He attended the University of Puerto Rico in Carolina and earned a bachelor&#39;s degree in accounting. He also holds an associate&#39;s degree in hotel and restaurant administration. He later earned his master&#39;s in finance and master&#39;s in education from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico. Vega also holds two doctorate degrees. One is in finance from Northcentral University in Prescott, Arizona and the other is in Business Administration Information System from Universidad del Turabo in Puerto Rico.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;He was a school teacher in Puerto Rico for 18 years and then served another 9 years as a school director. He taught mostly math and technology classes. When he retired from the Department of Education in Puerto Rico in 2022, he accepted an offer to teach Computer Science at John F. Kennedy High School in Montgomery County. About six months later, he joined the College. Vega also teaches at Bowie State University.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Vega comes from a family of teachers. His father is a retired welding teacher, and his mother is a retired social worker who was employed in a high school. Some of Vega&#39;s siblings also are teachers.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;He has developed a teaching philosophy over the years that he said is student-centered, collaborative, and forward looking.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#34;I like to create an environment where learners feel both supported and challenged. I emphasize adaptability and connecting theory to practice. I also encourage critical thinking, and I try to foster problem solving skills that extend beyond the classroom,&#34; Vega said.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;He said he hopes students who take his classes will &#34;learn how to break complex problems into smaller parts, think logically and systematically, test assumptions, and approach ambiguity with structure.&#34;&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Vega said teaching energizes him, and he loves sharing his knowledge about computer science.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#34;Teaching computer science never feels stale because new tools emerge, cybersecurity threats evolve, development paradigms shift, and artificial intelligence is changing workflows,&#34; Vega said.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;The Laurel resident is one of three part-time faculty members honored in 2026 with a Shoenberg Fellowship. Vega&#39;s research focuses on how artificial intelligence is transforming educational practices in computer science and technology. He said he hopes it will raise important questions about AI&#39;s impact on student learning and skill development.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#34;This study examines the extent to which the use of ChatGPT influences students&#39; development of debugging, problem solving, and independent critical thinking skills in coding courses. The research investigates whether the use of ChatGPT inhibits student development and reduces hands-on practice. It also exams whether students&#39; reliance on ChatGPT promotes dependency that limits independent and critical thinking to code,&#34; Vega explained.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Early results from his study show while ChatGPT may offer short-term efficiency and support, excessive reliance on the tool does not appear to inhibit students&#39; ability to learn and develop critical thinking skills.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#34;The study highlights the need for pedagogical frameworks that balance the instructional benefits of AI tools with strategies that preserve hands-on practice and cognitive skill development,&#34; Vega said.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;He presented his research at The 2026 World Congress in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Applied Computing. The event was held in Las Vegas last month.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Often there is talk today about how AI will replace the need for coders in the future. Vega does not subscribe to that theory.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#34;I don&#39;t see that happening. My experiments with using ChatGPT for coding indicates there will always be errors, and you need people with coding experience to fix the errors. I see ChatGPT as a way to help with coding but not as something that will replace the need for people who are coders,&#34; Vega said.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;When Vega is not conducting research or teaching, he enjoys watching sports, in particular basketball. He used to play baseball and basketball but these days he is just a fan. He also enjoys going to the gym. In addition, Vega said he loves spending time at the beach when he gets a chance to travel.&#60;/p&#62;</story_body><attached_files><attachmentcount>1</attachmentcount><attached_file><file><rawname>JoseVega.png</rawname><href>attach/45de530b-709f-ccb4-8d14-2555d485db3d/JoseVega.png</href></file><thumbnail><rawname>tn_0.png</rawname><href>attach/45de530b-709f-ccb4-8d14-2555d485db3d/tn_0.png</href></thumbnail></attached_file></attached_files><display_image><rawname>di_0.png</rawname><href>attach/45de530b-709f-ccb4-8d14-2555d485db3d/di_0.png</href></display_image><category_name>Employee News</category_name><featured_story>0</featured_story><show_display_picture>1</show_display_picture><display_order_in_category>20</display_order_in_category><story_summary/>

Although the team&#39;s national tournament hopes fell just short, the foundation has been set for another championship run.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;With longtime head coach Patricia Westenberg stepping away from the program, former top assistant Richard Carter takes over as head coach. Carter inherits a championship culture and is focused on guiding the Raptors back to the top of the region while pursuing the program&#39;s first NJCAA National Tournament berth.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;New Faces Ready to Make an Impact&#60;/strong&#62;&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Montgomery College returns several key players from last year&#39;s championship team, including team leader in kills Sofiia Mateshuk. However, the Raptors will feature a significantly new-look roster after graduating nine sophomores.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;New middle hitter Zina Ashe-Moncet will look to fill the role left by Hillary Malik, while sophomore transfer Makayla Holland will share the starting setter position with freshman Aniya Gallion. The talented incoming class will look to step into key roles and continue Montgomery&#39;s winning tradition.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;The preseason will focus on building team chemistry and identifying the next generation of playmakers as the Raptors prepare for another challenging schedule. Montgomery will also travel to Rockford, Illinois, for the first time to compete in the Opening Weekend Tournament, one of the largest and most competitive junior college tournaments in the country. The Raptors will open against perennial powerhouse Kirkwood Community College, which finished fifth at last year&#39;s NJCAA National Championship Tournament.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#34;This will be an exciting year for the Raptors. I believe we have built a great roster that will be able to compete at the highest level. We know the other teams in the region have been recruiting great players and preparing for the season. We are looking forward to some great and highly competitive competition.&#34; - Coach Carter&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Home Matches to Watch&#60;/strong&#62;&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;The 2026 home schedule features several exciting opportunities for fans to catch the Raptors in action.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Tri-Match - Saturday, September 26&#60;/strong&#62;&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Fans can enjoy two Montgomery College matches in one day during the annual home tri-match.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;11 a.m.&#60;/strong&#62;Montgomery College vs. College of Southern Maryland&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;3 p.m.&#60;/strong&#62;Montgomery College vs. Allegany College of Maryland&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Rivalry Match - Tuesday, September 29 | 6 p.m.&#60;/strong&#62;&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;The Raptors close out their September home schedule against regional rival Frederick Community College.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Sophomore Recognition Night - Wednesday, October 7 | 6 p.m.&#60;/strong&#62;&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Montgomery College will honor its sophomore class prior to its match against Carroll Community College.&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Join the Raptors This Fall&#60;/strong&#62;&#60;/p&#62;&#13;&#10;&#60;p&#62;Admission to all home matches is free, and fans can look forward to several themed match nights throughout the season.
