The Montgomery College community is invited to attend a Science Center Observatory Public Night Friday, November 18, beginning at 6 p.m., weather permitting. Dr. Carrie Fitzgerald will host the event.

A call will be made about the weather by 6 p.m. on Friday. Check out the observatory website (http://mcobservatory.wordpress.com/) or call 240-567-5415 for updates.

We are still in a transition period with our observatories. Installation of the larger scopes on the roof of the new science center is underway. In the meantime, we will be setting up several smaller scopes (our Celestron 8-inchers) outside the new observatory. Binoculars and Celestron SkyScouts will also be available for use, and astronomy club members will be on hand with me to answer questions and talk about the night sky.

We'll have hot cocoa and coffee available to keep us all warm and caffeinated.

The observatory is located on the roof of the Science Center on the Rockville Campus.

To get to the new observatory, go into the Science Center main entrance. From the main entrance, take the stairs or elevator to the 4th floor. The elevator requires a key card to get to the roof, so if you need the elevator, an astronomy club member will be available on the 4th floor escort you up.

If you want to take the stairs, you can just continue up the stairs to the 5th floor. Follow the signs to the observatory.

We will aim for a variety of celestial goodies including a last quarter Moon, Jupiter, Uranus, and the comet Garrard, as well as the usual assortment of star clusters and nebulae. Hope you can join us!
