This marks the fourth consecutive Maryland State Championship for Montgomery Blair.
The Rockville Campus hosted the event for the sixth consecutive year in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy. Dr. Judy Ackerman, Rockville's vice president and provost, welcomed the teams and other visitors to campus. Mr. Adrian Chapman, chief operating officer of Washington Gas, also greeted students and briefly spoke about science and engineering careers in the gas utility industry.
Thirty-three high school teams representing nine Maryland counties began the event, competing in five preliminary matches to determine which 16 teams would advance to the afternoon's second round. The high schools competing were Albert Einstein, Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Centennial, DeMatha, Eleanor Roosevelt, La Plata, Landon, Montgomery Blair (3 teams), Mountain Ridge (2 teams), Northern (2 teams), Northwest (2 teams), Poolesville (3 teams), Richard Montgomery (3 teams), Smithsburg, St. Mary's Ryken, Stone Ridge, Thomas Wootton (2 teams), Urbana (3 teams), Walt Whitman, and Walter Johnson (2 teams).
During the lunch break, guest speaker Mr. Michael Menzel, chief engineer of the NASA James Webb Space Telescope, spoke about the science and the mission of the James Webb Space Telescope. He also discussed the differing roles of scientists and engineers on the project and the opportunities and challenges that await the next generation of scientists and engineers at NASA.
When the competition resumed, Centennial, La Plata, Montgomery Blair (three teams), Mountain Ridge, Northwest, Poolesville (two teams), Richard Montgomery, Smithsburg, St. Mary's Ryken, Thomas Wootton, Urbana, Walt Whitman, and Walter Johnson competed to determine the four semifinalists. Montgomery Blair (Team 1), Montgomery Blair (Team 2), Centennial, and Walter Johnson (Team 2) advanced to the semifinal matches.
Montgomery Blair Team 1 defeated Centennial in the first semifinal match to advance to the final. Montgomery Blair Team 2 defeated Walter Johnson Team 2 in the second semifinal match to advance to the final match against their schoolmates. The final match ended in an upset victory by Montgomery Blair Team 2 defeating the more experienced Montgomery Blair Team 1 In a close match.
Dr. Eun-Woo Chang, instructional dean science, engineering, and mathematics, presented trophies and medals to the winning team and the runner-up.
Montgomery Blair High School's winning team (Coach Tran Pham, Alexander Bourzutschky, Saurav Das, Alan Du, Charles Pasternak, and Avikar Periwal) will advance to the 22nd annual National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C., April 26-30. This will be Coach Pham's fourth consecutive year at the National Final. This will be the first National Final for all of the Montgomery Blair team members. More than 60 state and regional teams from all over the United States will compete. In addition, winning state teams of high school students will attend science seminars and compete in a verbal forum to solve technical problems and answer questions in all branches of science and math.
Washington Gas, Green Clean, LLC, and the Montgomery College Office of Academic Initiatives generously provided funding for the 2012 Maryland Science Bowl.

<p>Join the <a href="https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/events/asian-pacific-heritage/" target="_blank">MC Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander</a> (AANHPI) Book Club this fall as we dive into Yoko Ogawa's <em>The Memory Police</em>, a captivating dystopian novel about the horrors of state surveillance from one of Japan's most notable writers. Hailed by<em> <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/aug/23/the-memory-police-yoko-ogawa-review" target="_blank">The Guardian</a></em> as, "a masterpiece, meditating on totalitarianism and resistance as well as the rhythms of life and death,"<em> The Memory Police</em> will spark rich discussions on the themes of memory, loss, and individual autonomy.</p>
<p>Our first meeting will take place in late September. Those interested in joining the Book Club can e-mail Yvonne Hu-Cotto, Michelle Chan, and/or Nghi Nguyen. The Zoom meeting link will be provided as a calendar invite.</p>

<p data-ccp-border-top="0px none " data-ccp-padding-top="0px">The <strong>AANHPI Book Club</strong> reads books written by Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) authors. The AANHPI experience is a living, breathing, and evolving culture that deserves its own study. We will learn, understand, and attempt to define the AANHPI experience through the reading and discussions of these books.</p>
<p>Previous selections include<em> Pachinko</em> by Min Jin Lee (FA25) and<em> My Year Abroad</em> by Chang Rae-Lee (SP26).</p>

Faculty members who expect to use the Assessment and Testing Centers for in-person testing are invited to attend. The workshop will focus on RegisterBlast, the platform faculty will use to submit, edit, and retrieve their tests and students will use to make their testing appointments. Tips will be shared to facilitate a seamless testing process and a positive experience for faculty and students. Staff will be ready to answer questions from individual faculty members.
