https://insidemc.montgomerycollege.edu06-09-202606-09-202606-09-2026Tuesday, June 9, 2026Tuesday, June 9, 2026013a1d0f86-6956-69b4-c198-45cdaa5b052f36372008-05-05 00:00:01.000John HareWhat's Going On with Student Achievement and RetentionIn "College Learning for the New Global Century", the National Leadership Council for Learning and Educational Progress has called for "faculty and teachers in all the relevant disciplines [to] be involved in new national efforts to identify the goals for college-level achievement in [the] core areas of 21st-century learning, and to create purposeful curricular pathways, from high school through college, that ensure students' cumulative learning in ...core areas." We've been working on this at Montgomery College through the Learning College initiatives and other measures, such as the General Education review and outcomes assessment.
General Education and outcomes assessment provide an outline of what the College expects students to know, and the Learning College initiatives (Student Achievement and Retention, First-Year Experience, Learning Communities, Service Learning, Writing in the Disciplines, and Assessment and Accountability) are aimed at identifying and disseminating best practices so that students are equipped to meet those expectations.
The Middle States team leader's oral report specifically praised our Learning College initiatives at Montgomery College. Moreover, the Collegewide strategic action items developed by faculty and staff at the annual planning retreat for Fiscal Year 2010 are closely aligned with our Learning College efforts.
For the last two years, our Innovative Initiative groups, each led by an administrator and at least one faculty member, have been focusing energy and resources on issues in their areas. Through this series of articles, you'll be able to see how activities already underway fit in with national initiatives as well as the College's action plans for the future. You'll also learn about the exciting work the Innovative Initiative groups have done to date and how you can become involved in their undertakings.
The first strategic action item calls on the College to "expand early intervention programs to meet the needs of our existing and future students with mandatory advising and orientation, collecting and analyzing relevant data to define obstacles to student success and determine solutions." The Student Achievement and Retention group is charged with the development and exploration of possible strategies and models for focusing our resources on student achievement.
The team, under the leadership of Vice President and Provost Judy Ackerman and Dr. Athos Brewer, has laid the foundation for Collegewide progress in these areas. They have been developing interventions for students enrolled in Collegewide Barrier Courses (CBCs) based on high enrollment and low success rates. These include planning for supplemental instruction (SI) in sections of Math 103.
For Spring 2009, they will identify faculty teaching a CBC course who are interested in developing a podcast review for their course. Students will be able to access this podcast remotely and repeatedly. They will know how well this works because they'll be tracking the success of students who use the review sessions and comparing their success rates with students who do not use the podcast.
In the advising area, the group has also been active, working toward providing electronic academic advising as an option to all students. They will track usage of e-MAP and participant success to evaluate this tool.
Finally, if funds and the production schedule permit, the team will distribute a campus Quick Reference Guide to College employees and new students. This will make it easier for employees to direct prospective and new students to where they can get the help that they need.

<p data-ccp-border-top="0px none " data-ccp-padding-top="0px">The <strong>AANHPI Book Club</strong> reads books written by Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) authors. The AANHPI experience is a living, breathing, and evolving culture that deserves its own study. We will learn, understand, and attempt to define the AANHPI experience through the reading and discussions of these books.</p>
