Have You Congratulated the 11 Winners of Innovation Funds?

The second annual cycle of the Innovation Fund received 40 proposals totaling more than $190,000. David Sears, executive director of the Montgomery College Foundation, announced the 11 winners of the Innovation Fund grants totaling over $44,000 on May 16. The spring 2012 grant cycle of the Innovation Fund was made possible by generous support from the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, the Webber Family Foundation and individual donors, including Dr. DeRionne Pollard.

The 11 recipients were selected as follows:
*Eun-Woo Chang and Cynthia Wei (SEM - Rockville) will launch a project that involves a student YouTube video contest as an innovative way to generate student excitement and interest in STEM.

*Catherine Cooper (Writing, Reading, and Language Center - TP/SS) will pilot a volunteer peer tutoring program.

*James Cosgrove (Biology - Rockville) will initiate a project called "Engaging MC Students in Biological Research: Use of Mammalian Tissue Culture to Teach Research Techniques to Students".

*Carrie Fitzgerald (Physics, Engineering, and Geosciences - Rockville) will implement a student-developed video series on Astronomy called "The Universe in Three Minutes or Less."

*Tacy Holiday, Beatrice Lauman, and Paula Bostic (Germantown) collaborated on a successful proposal for an academic boot camp.

*Lucy Laufe (Honors Program Collegewide) received funding for a Board of Trustees Scholars Orientation/Welcome Packet to create greater access to learning opportunities for high-achieving students at Montgomery College.

*Beatrice Lauman (BSMAT - Germantown) will engage in a new Transfer Project that targets STEM majors who intend to transfer to bachelor degree granting institutions and help improve their completion and transfer rates.

*Amanda McIntosh (Student Development - Germantown) developed a successful project for Peer-to-Peer Mentoring for Adult Students in the College Accelerated Program in Business.

*Andrea Milo (Student Development - TP/SS) is piloting a "Live Advisor" chat.

*James Sniezek and Jay Marciano (NASBMIS and Counseling - TP/SS) collaborated on a project to assess the First Year Experience through e-portfolios.

*Nathan Zook and Karen Delgado worked together on a "Model UN" project for the College.

The Montgomery College Foundation will support one additional project through other funding (total $10,800):

*Susan Bontems (Natural Sciences/Chemistry Germantown) will use funding from the foundation to support a redesign of the Organic Chemistry Lecture.
