At Montgomery College, staff and faculty work every day to help our students in need. These same individuals also lend a hand in the community and to their neighbors in need. We want to share one recent story of a colleague's selfless act of service.

On Memorial Day, Donna Pina, director of foundation finance, jumped into action when her family told her that they saw smoke coming from a neighbor's backyard. When she went to investigate, Donna found her neighbor's parents working to put out the deck blaze with a garden watering can.

Donna had someone call 911, and then she grabbed a garden hose to douse the blaze with water. It worked, and the fire was extinguished.

More than 20 percent of the backyard deck was destroyed by the fire. Firefighters said that Donna's quick-thinking action kept the house from catching fire. They estimate it would've happened within 12 minutes.

Kudos to Donna!
