Lennox Campello will give remarks titled "On Identity in the Arts: Who is Latino?" on Thursday, October 11, 2012, 4 p.m. at Montgomery College's Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Arts Center. His address will be in the main floor auditorium at 930 King Street, Silver Spring, MD 20910. Admission and parking are free. Mr. Campello is presented by the Montgomery College Arts Institute. F. Lennox Campello is a regularly published art critic of regional prominence. His art reviews have been published in the Washington Post, Visions Magazine for the Arts, Dimensions Magazine, Pitch Magazine, The City Beat, The KOAN Art Newsletter, Art Calendar, DC One Magazine and various local newspapers. He also appears regularly on the radio as a guest discussing DC area art issues. In 2005, the artist also became the host for a series of TV appearances in various local programs dealing with the visual arts. Campello studied art at the University of Washington School of Art in Seattle. In the year he graduated from Washington, he won the William Whipple National Art Competition First Prize for Printmaking, the silver medal at the Ligoa Duncan Art Competition in Paris and the French "Prix de Peinture de Raymond Duncan," also in Paris. In 1981 Campello was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Navy and was assigned duties in Spain, where he worked on a series of landscapes of Andalusia which now hang in over fifty private collections in Spain, Portugal and the United States. He also exhibited in various venues in Spain. Details below along with a link for ticket information: Beloved New York Times bestselling author Lisa See draws on the vibrancy and turmoil of post-Civil War Los Angeles to tell the story of three Chinese women who managed to survive and, eventually, thrive, despite all odds. In 1870, three Chinese women arrive in the small, dusty, and violent pueblo of Los Angeles. Dove, the bound-footed daughter of an imperial scholar, is entrancing and innocent. These characteristics should bring her great rewards, beginning with her arranged marriage to a much older merchant. Petal, the big-footed daughter of peasants, has grown up hungry and with dirt between her toes. In a moment of desperation, Petal's father sells her to buy money for rice seed, and she is loaded onto a ship to the Gold Mountain--America--where she is once again sold. Moon is married to a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine. She is educated, speaks fluent English, and has been endowed with a face of great beauty, yet her failed footbinding as a child has left her with a limp that lessens her value in the eyes of many. Each woman has her own desires. Dove wants to love and be loved, Petal desires freedom, and Moon seeks justice. Together they face a larger society that wishes them not one ounce of good will. c0f2c133-51dd-a174-0518-3a7d8a67302e1258902026-06-01 00:00:01.000Elizabeth B FeldmanPart-Time Faculty June SpotlightBy Liz Feldman On Behalf of the Part-Time Faculty Institute She has been a Jeopardy contestant, has played baseball with the New York Yankees Fantasy Camp, and has performed as a trapeze artist. These are just a few of the unique talents that help define part-time faculty member Nicole Porcaro. She teaches English 101 and English 102 mainly at the Rockville campus. However, she also has taught at Germantown. Porcaro joined the College four years ago. Besides teaching undergraduate students, Porcaro also teaches at the College's Lifelong Learning Institute. She has developed and taught a number of courses such as 'Take Me Out to the Theatre: Baseball and Film' and 'A History of Jeopardy.' Porcaro grew up in Clinton, New Jersey and moved to Maryland when she received a scholarship to attend college at the University of Maryland. She graduated from the University in 2007 with degrees in Broadcast Journalism and Sociology. She has two master's degrees, one from Purdue University Global where she earned a Master's of Science in Education, Language, and Literacy for Secondary Grades. Her other degree is from Harvard University where she earned a Master's of Liberal Arts in English. Porcaro also is a Doctoral Candidate at Vanderbilt University. Her focus is Leadership and Learning in Organizations. She expects to complete her doctorate by July. Porcaro is one of three part-time faculty members honored this year with a Shoenberg Fellowship. "I will be expanding my Vanderbilt dissertation research on my partnership with the Johns Hopkins Center for Indigenous Health. I plan to use my research to create a unit in an English 102 course on indigenous people. The course will explore exploitation, anthropology, and history through a health focused lens," Porcaro explained. She said the plan would be for students to read literature, conduct research, analyze sources, and write a capstone essay on a topic related to indigenous cultures and health. "Students could use what they learn about indigenous health practices to compare and contrast with their respective cultures. This can help bridge gaps, increase tolerance, and open up rich discussions for a multi-cultural seminar or interdisciplinary panel discussion," Porcaro said. The Shoenberg Fellowship is just one of the honors the College has bestowed on Porcaro. Last year, the College presented her with the 'Outstanding Part-Time Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching and Advising.' She also received the Eric Grosse Memorial Fellowship and the COIL Fellowship in 2025. Teaching is just one facet of Porcaro's life. She also runs her own tutoring business, 'No Anxiety Prep.' She launched her business in 2012. "No Anxiety Prep focuses on independent, personalized educational consulting for secondary school admissions, college admissions, and graduate school admissions," Porcaro said. She became interested in the tutoring field after a brief career in journalism. She started out working part-time for Kaplan, the renowned tutoring and test preparation service. "I never dreamed it would go further than teaching a few night classes. However, I spent five years with Kaplan performing a variety of responsibilities," Porcaro said. She said she was named Kaplan's Tutor of the Year in 2009. Porcaro shifted gears when she began her own company. She said 'No Anxiety Prep' has won numerous awards for its work. She has expanded her business into 25 states and 11 countries. Porcaro said her interest in teaching and education began when she was a child. "I would come home from school and play school. I made worksheets, did workbooks, and taught my stuffed animals. I took the SAT's when I was in sixth grade and thought they were fun. I loved the idea of getting smarter," Porcaro said. Her students appreciate her passion for teaching. Porcaro said some of her favorite quotes from students include, "I never liked English, but you totally changed that for me." "I didn't even consider journalism as a career, but now I am." However, she does face challenges in the classroom. "It's hard to deal with unmotivated students, and they are the ones I try the hardest to motivate by showing them real-world applications of what we're learning," she said. Porcaro loves her time at the College. "It is a place where professors can teach without fear of micromanagement while being encouraged to use their own unique personalities to connect with students, drive change, and advance professionally," she said.
