The Montgomery College men's soccer team came a great save and an open net from pulling off one of the great runs in MC sports history. But it was Herkimer County Community College's rebound and kick in the second overtime of a scoreless NJCAA Division III national title game that ended the Raptors' dream run, 1-0, Nov. 11 in New York. Herkimer's men's soccer program has won nine national championships.
First-year coach Pedro Braz's Raptors proved that men's soccer at MC is in good hands. Braz was recently named coach of the year after taking the helm just two weeks prior to the Raptors' first game. Three Raptors were named to the all-tournament team, Kevin Andino, Saamir Diarra and Brandon McKay.
The dramatic winning goal came midway through the second overtime. The defending national champion Generals' Mike Pope drilled a shot on goal and Raptors keeper Serigne Baba Gaye, a freshman, made a sprawling stop. The rebound came to HCCC's Craig McCabe who pummeled it past the helpless Raptors' star keeper into the net, breaking the hearts of the visitors and sending the homestanding Herkimer crowd into a frenzy.
