Published: 2012-11-19 00:00:01.000

A workshop, "Basics of Advising as a Faculty Member," will be sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning and will provide the basic information and resources that faculty members need to advise students on questions that students commonly ask their trusted professors. Attendees will learn or review important advising tools including the course catalog, MC's advising worksheets, and ARTSYS. This course recognizes the important role of counselors and academic advisers and will provide a list of resources and contact information for faculty members to use to refer students to the appropriate source for more complicated matters and follow up. The workshop will be facilitated by Professor Jennifer Polm.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
(1) direct students to appropriate online resources and academic advisers with certain specialties
(2) navigate ARTSYS, the Maryland Articulation System, and to discuss courses required for a given major at a given college and show students how to navigate it on their own.
(3) identify Maryland colleges with a given major using ARTSYS.
(4) find and use Montgomery College Advising Worksheets to advise students on courses (both within and outside of the faculty member's discipline) to take to complete their AA.
(5) explain rules about repeating courses to students and processes for appealing for a fourth attempt at a course.
(6) explain the incomplete grade designator, I, to students and processes they should follow to complete the course.
(7) navigate both the paper and online course catalog to find courses and degree requirements.
(8) distinguish between prerequisites, corequisites, and assessment levels and use this understanding to advise students on which courses to take.

"Basics of Advising as a Faculty Member" will be offered at the Takoma Park/Silver Springs Campus on Thursday, November 29 from 9-11 a.m. in the Resource Center, Room 211. Registration is available through the Professional Development System.
