Interactive Workshop: Introduction to Object-Based Learning
Description: Did you know that Yale University offers a program to bring medical students to the Yale Art Museum to learn how to look at art? The outcome--students who provide more complete and accurate diagnoses than students who did not participate in the training. More than 10 other medical schools now offer such a program.
Students in all fields of study can benefit by being more deliberate observers of the world around them. They can write more richly, analyze more effectively and theorize more holistically-because they see more completely. Additionally, if they work in teams, they learn to collaborate more effectively. Might your students benefit from learning how to be more deliberate, careful observers and collaborators?
Introduction to Object-Based Learning, an interactive workshop for MC faculty and interested staff, is offered by the Paul Peck Humanities Institute. The workshop offers participants the opportunity to better understand object-based learning, practice simple observational exercises that they can later employ in the classroom, discover ways to utilize objects from the Smithsonian collection and other sources to enhance your students' classroom experience, and learn about the Montgomery College Smithsonian Faculty Fellowship Program.
* read several articles in preparation for participating in the workshop;
* prepare and share their (brief) bio to enhance networking opportunities;
* research and submit an image (assignment will be sent after you register);
* be introduced to and practice three activities that promote observational skills and object-based learning;
* participate in a group discussion to define "object-based learning";
* examine the benefits of using virtual and brick-and-mortar museum exhibits for teaching;
* assess whether the activities or exhibits may be useful or suitable in participant's classroom;
* receive an annotated bibliography with relevant sources;
* learn about the Montgomery College Smithsonian Faculty Fellowship Program; and
* complete a survey (Survey Monkey) to assess workshop impact and effectiveness.
This workshop is a collaborative offering with the Center for Teaching and Learning at Montgomery College. Participants will receive documentation of their hours through CTL.
