Nationally known mathematics educator and magician, Dr. Arthur Benjamin, will present two fascinating talks at the Rockville Campus on January 31: a student talk on "Secrets of Mental Math," and a faculty talk on "The Beauty and Magic of Mathematics."

Student talk: Secrets of Mental Math
10 a.m.-11 a.m. (Theatre Arts Arena)

In this entertaining and fast-paced performance, award-winning teacher and author Dr. Arthur Benjamin will demonstrate how to mentally add and multiply numbers faster than a calculator, how to figure out the day of the week for any date in history, and other amazing feats of mind.

Faculty talk: The Beauty and Magic of Mathematics
1-2 p.m. (Science Center, Room 125)

Join Dr. Benjamin as he explores such topics as the mysteries of the Fibonacci numbers, how much you should wager with various games of chance, and how to quickly square a five-digit number in your head.

Both talks will kick off the 2014 Rockville Science, Engineering, and Mathematics area lecture series.
