(SMI), a recently founded non-profit organization, to launch what is now known as The Ibanda Project. This business was founded in an effort to create opportunities for women in Ibanda district of Uganda to become financially self-sufficient through the sales of handmade necklaces. These necklaces are designed and artfully created by many women in the Ibanda region of Uganda. Each necklace is unique, with beads crafted out of recycled Ugandan posters, magazines, and newspapers. The vision of this endeavor is to provide women in the Ibanda district of Uganda with the means to successfully use their gifts and talents to not only better their daily living conditions, but provide them with a safe, sustainable, and empowering job. In addition, a portion of the proceeds collected from necklace sales have and will continue to fund a newly planted microfinance bank (Sacco) in Kiburara, Uganda, with these women participating as founding members and shareholders. Abby Hollandsworth, co-founder and team leader of The Ibanda Project, is a freshman at the Macklin Business Institute at Montgomery College. She was given the unique opportunity to form a partnership with SMI in 2013 through connections with John Emelio, founder of Sustainable Missions Inc. Although the idea behind The Ibanda Project was on the horizon, SMI was in need of several components in order to make this business idea a success. After observing their need for both marketing and sales assistance, as well as funding, Abby was able to link the students of Macklin Business Institute and SMI together in order to form a sustainable partnership otherwise known as The Ibanda Project. Many exciting advancements have happened since The Ibanda Project was launched in November of last year. The students of Macklin Business Institute have been able to form several relationships with organizations and businesses alike in the DC/Metro area in order to further the advancement and sales of The Ibanda Project's Ugandan jewelry. Their most local partnership is formed with Dawson's Market in Rockville, MD, with other partnerships spanning as far as Dublin Coffee Roasters (a fair trade coffee shop) in Frederick, MD. The students have also been able to manually display and sell necklaces at booths on Montgomery College campuses, and at international events, local schools, and churches. In January of this year, Hollandsworth was able to join several SMI members on a 16-day trip to the Ibanda district of Western Uganda as a representative of Macklin Business Institute. The team was able to get a first-hand understanding of the region, visually understand what resources these women have access to, as well as meet and form relationships with many of the Ugandan women who are members of The Ibanda Project.
