What's New at the Rockville Writing, Reading, and Language Center

Dear Faculty Partners:

In an effort to increase student success and satisfaction at Montgomery College, the Rockville Writing, Reading, and Language Center (WRLC) is pleased to announce several exciting additions to our services. The WRLC has instituted new tutoring session sheets, a quick question sesk, and two new kinds of workshops: an audiobook reading series and game days!

Our updated tutoring session sheets were piloted over the summer, and they were a resounding success! Some of you may already have found these pink sheets in your mailbox; we hope they gave you greater insight into the contents of your students' tutoring sessions. These new sheets require students to prioritize a single skill for each tutoring session and allowing them (and you) to track their progress over time. Asking them to focus on skills-based outcomes, rather than assignment-based outcomes, encourages our students to take greater responsibility for their own learning and success in your courses. In particular, we would like to draw your attention to the "next steps" portion of the sheet, where you can find information about how your students plan to follow up on their tutoring sessions.

In conjunction with these updated tutoring session sheets, we have also launched a <i>quick question desk </i> which serves two main purposes: to answer brief questions from students about reading, writing, and citations styles and to help students prioritize the skills for which they seek tutoring services. We encourage you, insofar as is appropriate for your course objectives, to send your students to us with your suggestions on which skill(s) they should practice. We also encourage you to send your students to the <i>quick question desk</i> for advice from our instructional associates, all of whom have advanced degrees in English, TESOL, or related fields.

Our workshop series continues to offer opportunities for students to study essential points of grammar, organization, rhetoric, and citations. This semester, we are also offering opportunities for students to develop their reading and vocabulary skills. The WRLC will host game day workshops, where students will play games to test their vocabulary, compete against each other's scores, and help a great charity.

Additionally, we are hosting an audiobook series, where students can listen to professional narration of short stories, practice their critical reading skills, and expand their vocabulary. More information about these events can be found on our website or Facebook page.

Instructional associates are available to visit your classroom to give brief overviews of WRLC services or explain how to make the most of a tutoring session. To schedule such a visit, please email us at vanessa.nakoski@montgomerycollege.edu. To schedule a time to bring your class to the center for a visit, please stop by the front desk in HU 002 to reserve our classroom for an orientation.

These efforts are intended to reinforce the concepts you teach in class! Please encourage all of your students to attend workshops, come for free tutoring, study reading materials, access the freeware in our computer labs, and use our quiet study spaces. Remember, however, that faculty are not allowed to require students to attend the WRLC for tutoring unless those lab hours are officially part of your course. We have included copies of relevant flyers in case you want to make copies for your students or post these on your office or classroom door. Thank you for your support!
