The first few weeks of school can be overwhelming, demanding and scary. The Montgomery College nursing program helps ease the way with a mentoring program.

To celebrate the program and to recruit both mentors and mentees, the MC nursing program sponsored it's first "meet and greet" of the semester on Thursday, September 4, 2014. During the event, students participated in icebreaker activities and "flash mentoring" as upper level students provided quick and informal tips.

The mentoring program, which is voluntary, primarily pairs first semester students with upper level students. Mentors provide encouragement and guidance easing the fears of new students in the program.

"It's not even about the work, it's about organizing myself--knowing when to start on something and how to get it done. A mentor helped me with that. My mentor was great. She gave me books, she was a cheerleader. I will help someone else," said one student.

For more information about this mentor program, please contact Cheryl Mofarrahi at or Kathy Awkard at
