In my corner of the College, as I reminisce about last Wednesday's dedication of our Bioscience Education Center, one word keeps recurring: WOW!

What a joyous day it was. Speaker after speaker--from State Comptroller Peter Franchot to Maryland Senator Nancy King to County Council President Craig Rice and a host of other county leaders--showered our College with glowing praise. Superlatives flowed freely. They talked of our College as the crown jewel of the county. And they made it clear that they know--they really get it--that we hold the key to the county's future. They see us as an institution that sparks innovation, fuels our economy, and ignites hope among our one million residents.

All of this genuine and unrestrained praise for our College was a tribute to you--your work, your innovation, your dedication, your commitment to our students. Don't ever doubt the esteem in which you are held. Put most simply, our government and business leaders think you are awesome. I couldn't agree more.

I deeply appreciate all the people who worked so hard to make this event such a smashing success. You put on an amazing show.

The BEC is emblematic of our commitment to partnerships that spur our economy, fortify our workforce, and give our students opportunities that students at other colleges can only dream about. Our alliance with Holy Cross Germantown Hospital is a perfect example. We are the only community college in the country with a major hospital on campus. That's just one of the many reasons I am looking forward to the Hospital's Open House next Sunday, September 21. This event will celebrate the opening of the first new hospital in Montgomery County in 35 years. With many collaborative programs already in place and even more in the planning stages, I know that BEC and HCGH will prove to be a dynamic duo.

Speaking of partnerships, this fall our ACES program, a joint effort of MC--at the helm--along with MCPS and USG, welcomed 277 students who graduated from high school last spring. This program takes dead aim at the opportunity gap that underlies the achievement gap. In the US, only eight percent of all students from the lowest income quartile graduate from college. ACES will begin to change that deplorable rate. And that in turn will begin to put a dent in the income inequality that is far too common in our county and the country.

The legacy of Dr. Hercules Pinkney, my predecessor and long-serving provost at our Germantown Campus, will always be alive at Montgomery College. Even in retirement, he continues to enrich that legacy. He gave an inspiring lecture entitled, "The 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964: The Personal Experiences and Reflections of Dr. Pinkney" at the Frank Islam Athenaeum Symposia series last Wednesday.

Our Raptors, hosting the first annual Tom Bichy Soccer Tournament, also inspired us last week. The tournament was a huge success, with talent-rich teams and nail-biting games. Our Raptors stood strong against tournament champion Richland College of Texas, finally succumbing 2-1 in overtime.

This week will bring more excitement for me. I'm looking forward to seeing you at my first Town Hall Meeting. The place is the Takoma/Silver Spring Campus in the Commons Atrium, and the time is 2 p.m. Come on by! And if you can't be there in person, you can always send an e-mail question to townhall@montgomerycollege.edu or watch from your corner of the College by tuning in to livestream.

Have a great week!
