October is National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month, dedicated to educating the public about what sudden cardiac arrest is and how to respond to a cardiac arrest.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is when the heart suddenly stops beating, resulting in no blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. In fact, SCA claims one life every two minutes, taking more lives each year than breast cancer, lung cancer, or AIDS COMBINED. These deaths occur in all ages, genders, ethnicities and geographic areas - SCA can strike anyone, anytime.

To decrease the death toll from SCA, it is important to understand what SCA is, what warning signs are, and how to respond and prevent SCA from occurring. The SCA Risk Assessment is an interactive tool designed to help individuals estimate their risk of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), a common cardiac arrhythmia that can occur abruptly and without warning. In fact, two-thirds of SCA deaths occur without any prior indications of heart disease. Learn your risk by using this online tool! ( It's fast and easy -- simply answer a few questions regarding your health and get your results. After you have finished using the SCA Risk Assessment, please consult with your physician regarding your results.

What can YOU do? Learn CPR and then get your friends and family involved too! It's easy! Sign up for a Lunch and Learn session - a 45-minute session where you'll learn to:
1. recognize an emergency;
2. call 911;
3. perform Hands Only CPR; and
4. use an AED.

Initially registration will be by departments/units, especially those units off-campus. Next spring, individual registrations will be accepted.

To register for a Lunch and Learn for your department/unit, contact Professor Kathy Dayton at

Sponsored by the Department of Emergency Planning and Emergency Preparedness Management and Fire Science Programs.
