The Montgomery College nursing program joined the YMCA Silver Spring at their annual Fall Festival on Saturday, October 4, 2014.

Students and faculty joined with community partners to provide a number of services in the health and wellness component of this event. Students did blood pressure assessments, and in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month, students also taught some community members about breast self-awareness techniques. "This was a chance to interact with members of the community, including the Montgomery County EMS, to learn about their services, and to mingle with them," said Jacqueline Sergon, 3rd semester nursing student. This was her second time participating with her peers in such a community service event.

Nursing students also created a fun way for children to learn about the importance of proper handwashing as a key component to health maintenance. After assessing the children's knowledge about when and why to wash their hands, nursing students then placed simulated germ lotion on the community children's hands. If they washed their hands properly, the 'Glo-Germs' would disappear underneath the fluorescent lights.

"I think that this kind of experience challenges us to put what we know into a form that kids will understand" said 2nd semester student Eileen Durkin. This was Eileen's first time participating. "We have to stop, think and age-appropriately explain."

The kids were told about Global Hand Washing Day--October 15--and asked to commit to sharing this information with others back at their schools and daycare centers. In the end, each student also received a small certificate acknowledging their efforts.

The event also provided many family friendly activities in an atmosphere of good music, good food and good fun.

The following nursing students participated in the YMCA Fall Festival:

2nd Semester Nursing Students
Salimah Bazmjow
Eileen Durkin
Ionela Hurtado

3rd Semester Nursing Students
Julie Kronen

The next opportunity for Montgomery College Nursing to participate in the community will be the annual Langley Park Health Check 2015 on November 9, 2014.
