Good morning from my corner of the College where I am happy to note that spring begins in just 18 days! February seems to have flown by, although we're stuck with some snowy reminders. This past week was a flurry of activity.

Town Hall Meeting

My Town Hall Meeting at Westfield South last Wednesday drew a host of stimulating comments and questions, which reminded me, yet again, what a dynamic, visionary community we have. Faculty, staff, and student topics covered e-cigarette use, part-time faculty pay, book rental fees, and academic restructuring, among many others. If you were not able to attend or view the live online broadcast, you can view the entire discussion here.

Innovation Abounds

Our Innovation Forum was also a lively event with expert presenters on technology and higher education capturing everyone's imagination as you can see here. The energy around innovation is clearly high and I see it moving to the next level with the new Montgomery College Innovation Journal, the Innovation Works 'Think and Do Tank,' as well as the Montgomery College Foundation's Innovation Fund. As we nurture a culture of innovation at the College I am certain that it will continue to bear creative fruit.

Workforce Development Programs Highlighted

The White House continues to be impressed by the College's innovation around workforce development, and sent a representative to MC's panel discussion on career and technology education a week ago Friday. Mark Mitsui, deputy assistant secretary for community colleges at the US Department of Education visited, on behalf of President Obama, to participate in the Department of Applied Technologies Construction Management Program event. I am delighted that two of the College's terrific workforce development programs--Construction Management and Hospitality Management--were highlighted.

Budget Advocacy Continues

Members of the Board of Trustees and I met with County Executive Ike Leggett last week to present the College's budget request. The next step occurs when the county executive sends the budget to the County Council mid-March. We are continuing our efforts to secure the support we need to propel the important mission of our institution. The first of five public forums on the programs and budgets of the College and Montgomery County Public Schools will be held tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building, 1 Veterans Place, Silver Spring. The meeting is open to the public and I will join Montgomery County Council Education Committee Chair Craig Rice and Montgomery County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Larry Bowers at the event.

Here's hoping that the first week in March brings warmer days in your corners of the College! Have a wonderful week!
