Award-Winning Writer E. Ethelbert Miller Speaks at Montgomery College October 22 9:30 and 11 a.m. Room 222, Gudelsky Institute for Technical Education Rockville Campus E. Ethelbert Miller is a multiple award-winning activist-artist, the author of 10 books and the editor of four anthologies. His poems and stories are included in every major anthology of African American and contemporary American literature and the "best of" essay anthologies. He has been a visiting professor and scholar-in-residence across the country, won honorary doctorates, received Fulbrights to teach internationally, hosted a weekly radio show, and served as a PEN Center and PEN Foundation board member. He has served as a board chairperson of the Institute for Policy Studies, board member of the African American Literature and Culture Society and The Writer's Center, editor of African American Review, Black Issues Book Review, Callaloo, and Poet Lore magazine. He is currently a Commissioner for the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, a board member of the Humanities Council of Washington, DC, hosts "Humanities Profiled" on DCTV, and serves frequently as a commentator on National Public Radio. Since 1974, he has been the director of the African American Resource Center at Howard University. He is the Poet Laureate of Washington, DC. In 1979, the Mayor of Washington, DC proclaimed September 28 "E. Ethelbert Miller Day." On July 17, 1994, the Mayor of Baltimore made him an honorary citizen of the city of Baltimore. In 2001 the Mayor of Jackson, Tennessee proclaimed May 21, 2001 as "E. Ethelbert Miller Day." Mr. Miller was awarded the Mayor's Art Award for literature, the Public Humanities Award from the DC Humanities Council, and the Columbia Merit Award from the literary community of Washington.
