The Montgomery College board of trustees held its second meeting of the academic year on Monday, October 19 and discussed student success, the intercampus shuttle and the capital budget.

The $68 million budget will be presented to the Montgomery County Council and includes funds for a new student services building on the Rockville Campus. A vote on the budget is expected next month.

In other business, the board approved renewal of the contract for the shuttle which runs between the College's three campuses. "I am very excited about this. It helps us more effectively guide our academic planning around scheduling. And it helps students effectively secure the classes they need across the institution," said Dr. DeRionne P. Pollard, president.

The board also approved contracts for the installation of new equipment at the planetarium.

Student success was high on the agenda and in the second of five constituent conversations with governance groups, the board invited members of the Faculty Council to discuss how to help students succeed in a roundtable discussion format.

Dr. Pollard spoke to the board about the importance of the College's partnerships with industry in helping students achieve their goals. Last week, 50 Montgomery College students toured Lockheed Martin's Security Intelligence Center (SIC) to learn about the state of cybersecurity and future career options in the field. "These are wonderful opportunities which make education real," Pollard said. Lockheed Martin is a partner in the College's cybersecurity lab which opens on October 26.

The board of trustees is the 10-member governing body of Montgomery College. Marsha Suggs Smith is chair. Members are appointed by the governor for a six-year term and include a student member who serves a one-year term. The board meets once a month.
