On Saturday November 19, Montgomery College hosted 54 sixth grade girls for Sonya Kovalevsky Day, a one day conference to introduce middle school girls to STEM fields (i.e. science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

This event was supported by a generous grants from AstraZeneca and AFCEA Bethesda.

The girls rotated through several activities:

Robotics by Dr. Jan Plane from University of Maryland

Chemistry Experiments by Dr. Rachel Ndonye & Dr. Laura Anna, and

DNA Explorations by Dr. Leah Allen.

During lunch, a current UMD student held an engaging and interactive discussion on internet safety. Thank you to Katie from Comp Sci Connect for the lively discussion!

Each participant received a t-shirt, a bag, and many STEM related gifts as well as a science project to complete at home. The day concluded with four former and current MC students giving some advice to the girls on how to be successful in the STEM classes.

Since the event, the Sonya Kovalevsky Program team has received several emails from parents who were impressed with the program. Below are some quotes:

"I wanted to let you know that Emma had a wonderful time on Saturday! I wanted to thank your fabulous team for making this program available. She & 2 other girls that attended Saturday's event got together after the event to 'work on experiments'!"

"I wanted to thank you for a wonderful day last Saturday - my daughter, Gwen, had a TON of fun! Thank you SO much for all the work it took to plan and implement! She really, really enjoyed herself and said she learned a lot!"

"Thank YOU so much for the wonderful opportunity for my daughter! She had an amazing time, and we can't wait to try out the "bubble" experiment that she took home with her. I am so grateful! THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THIS AMAZING DAY!"

Organizers Dr. Julie Rogers, Professor Rachel Saidi, and Professor Andrea Steelman) thank AstraZeneca, AFCEA Bethesda and all the volunteers who made the day an incredible success.
