Join the mathematics department as we welcome Dr. Edwin O'Shea of James Madison University on Friday March 24 from 2 to 2:50 p.m. in Sciences West 301 (simulcast in HT 216 on the Germantown Campus; and MP 140 on the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus.)

Abraham Lincoln effectively described Thomas Jefferson as the Euclid of a free society. We explore Euclid's Elements and examine its significant influence on the thinking and rhetoric of both Jefferson and Lincoln. We will focus especially on each president's invoking of geometry and the axiomatic method in arguing (mostly) against slavery.
