In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the award-winning violence-prevention group, "Men Can Stop Rape," will present their keynote address, "Where Do You Stand? Healthy Masculinity and Men Becoming Active Bystanders" in the Parilla Performing Arts Center at 12:30 p.m. today on the Rockville Campus today.

Running time: 75 minutes, plus Q&A

This event meets MC's multicultural diversity requirement for faculty and staff. Certificates of attendance will be provided for MC employees as well as for students.

"Men Can Stop Rape" seeks to mobilize men to use their strength for creating cultures free from violence. Most men are NOT perpetrators of violence, yet the majority of violent acts against women are committed by men. Historically, the vast majority of risk-reduction tactics are directed at women--a dynamic that contributes to destructive myths about sexual assault, like, for example, "she deserved it." For 20 years, Men Can Stop Rape has worked to shift this responsibility by engaging men as allies and inspiring them to feel motivated and capable to help end sexual assault.

"Where Do You Stand" is grounded in recent research on how and why men often choose not to intervene as active bystanders, even though the vast majority of males are opposed to violence against women. The presentation examines stereotypes about masculinity and the pressures that men experience in relation to unhealthy ideas about masculinity. It also explores how healthy masculinity can help to empower men at every level of violence prevention. Participants will learn about safe and effective strategies for bystander intervention when someone is at risk.

This event augments the learning experience of students who are studying sociology, psychology, media, history, communications, law, philosophy, English, or any course that includes critical thinking as a learning objective.
