After a thorough recruitment and selection process, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Surayya Johnson as the adult student services program manager for Montgomery College effective spring semester 2017. Ms. Johnson is no stranger to Montgomery College--for the past three years, she has served as the military enrollment services specialist for the Germantown Campus.

Ms. Johnson's professional experience includes over eight years supporting youth and adult development in higher education, non-profit and the federal government. She has been responsible for creating effective partnerships with community based organizations, state/federal agencies and schools and for providing essential services to youth and adults in low-income communities.

As assistant director of admissions at Binghamton University (SUNY), her primary responsibilities included recruiting freshmen/transfer students, students of color and all nursing students. In New York City, her non-profit work included spearheading a life-skills drop-out prevention program serving over 5,000 students; she managed mentoring, tutoring, teen-mom and behavior modification programs for at-risk youth. Her work with adults consisted of facilitating their development process. She empowered families in low-income communities through parental advocacy and literacy programs and workshops.

At the University of Maryland, she served as the graduate assistant for diversity and Inclusion programming and developed and marketed diversity and staff recognition program initiatives for a staff of 430.

In her role as adult student services program manager, she will provide collegewide leadership in planning and implementing programs and services to address the unique needs and concerns of adult learners, single parents and their family members.

Ms. Johnson received her bachelor of arts degree in English and history from Binghamton University (SUNY). She also received a master's degree in human relations from Oklahoma University, and a master's in public management from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Ms. Johnson's primary office is located in RC 207 on the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus. She will also split her time to serve students at both the Rockville and Germantown Campuses. Her office locations at those campuses are CC 019 on the RV Campus and SA 266 on the GT Campus. Ms. Johnson can be contacted via college email and her telephone number is 240-567-1614.

Please join me in welcoming Ms. Johnson to her new role!
