Staff Council Recommendations Endorsed by College Council

The College Council recently endorsed three recommendations from the Staff Council and forwarded them to College leadership for consideration.

<b><i>Special Recognition Leave Award.</b></i> The first recommendation calls for a special recognition award in the form of leave to be added to the already established monetary awards. The recommendation was made in response to a question raised by a constituent at a Town Hall meeting in November 2016 and then, at Dr. Pollard's suggestion, brought to the Staff Council in December. An ad hoc committee of the Staff Council researched current College staff recognition awards as well as leave-based awards programs at other institutions.

<b><i>Alternative Annual Performance Bonus.</b></i> The Staff Council also requested that during years when performance bonuses are unfunded, the College provide staff who "exceed expectations" on the annual performance evaluation two additional paid personal days, available immediately, and staff who receive "far exceed expectations" four additional paid personal days, available immediately. The proposal was developed to address numerous constituent questions received this year about the lack of performance bonuses and to come up with an alternative to the current policy.

<b><i>Funding for Temporary Employees.</b></i> A third recommendation asks that funding be made available to hire temporary employees to cover the job duties of staff who are granted professional development leave. The request was made to address a constituent concern regarding an employee originally granted professional development leave but, when no funding was available for a temporary replacement, the leave was denied.
