The grant is part of the NEH Humanities Initiatives at Community Colleges program. "Montgomery College is honored to have been chosen by the National Endowment for the Humanities for this award," said DeRionne P. Pollard, Ph.D., president of Montgomery College. "This grant will allow Montgomery College to incorporate the global humanities more thoroughly into its classrooms and programming. We are deeply grateful to the NEH for providing this essential funding to strengthen and expand our humanities offerings." Inspired by a new exhibition at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History titled, Many Voices, One Nation, the grant will infuse intercultural competencies in Communication Studies and non-Humanities (professional) fields through Global Humanities approaches. It will support a new partnership between the College and the Montgomery County Historical Society. The project will enable non-Humanities faculty (business, law, engineering and nursing, among others) and faculty from the Communication Studies discipline to join together in a professional development opportunity with the ultimate goal of increasing students' critical thinking and intercultural competencies. The Many Voices, One College Faculty Fellows Professional Development Cohort with two associated workgroups will begin in spring 2018 with the first cohort of eleven interdisciplinary participants. It will be repeated for two additional semesters, running a total of three times with a combined 33 participants. External speakers, including distinguished scholars in history, literature, philosophy, religion, and Africana Studies, will contribute expertise and fresh insights from a variety of humanities disciplines. The project will be led by two Co-Project Directors (PD). English Professor Rita S. Kranidis, Ph.D., director of the GHI, will serve as the Co-PD and instructor for the Cohort and the Global Humanities Approaches for Non-Humanities Courses Workgroup. Assistant Professor of Communication Studies Andre E.C. Betancourt, Ph.D., will serve as the Co-PD and instructor for the Global Humanities Approaches for Introduction to Human Communication Workgroup. "Global Humanities: Many Voices, One College" will expand on the already highly successful work of the College's Global Humanities Institute (GHI), created by an NEH "Bridging Cultures" Challenge Grant in 2012, by helping faculty introduce global learning objectives into their courses, and by adding humanistic content to Introduction to Human Communication, a highly enrolled General Education course.
