New Telephone System for the College

In January 2017, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) announced that it would be transitioning the College to a new cloud-based telephone system. The Central Services Building was the first location to be equipped with the new technology and it has been well received.

OIT will begin to migrate the nearly 4,000 telephones installed throughout the College to the new platform beginning this month and continuing over the fiscal year. When fully implemented, the new system will provide much greater functionality, reduced maintenance complexity, and greater efficiencies for College employees. New features will include voice mail messages delivered to e-mail inboxes, tighter integration with cell phones, and improved customer service applications for use by the College Response Center, the IT Service Desk, and other College call centers.

Because our new service is cloud-based, no new hardware is needed except the telephone handsets themselves. Today's telephone systems are designed to use the same network hardware that connects your desktop PC to the Internet. This technology is called "VoIP" - Voice over Internet Protocol - and it allows modern phone systems to integrate voice, video conferencing, text messaging, smartphones, and desktop software applications into a comprehensive service known as "Unified Communications."

We will be contacting individual areas as we work through the deployment schedule. Installation of each telephone handset will take no more than thirty minutes to complete and will cause minor interruption during your work day.
