Construction to Impact East Garage on TP/SS Campus

Category: Need to Know

Montgomery College Community,

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation and the College have executed a license agreement for the County to construct a portion of the Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT)* around the East Garage on the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus. The work is anticipated to start Monday, October 30, 2017 and anticipated to be completed Monday, November 27, 2017, pending site and weather conditions.

During construction:

1. There will be a period of time when the entrance to the East Garage on King Street will be closed for approximately five days. During the closure, the Fenton Street exit will be altered temporarily to allow vehicles to enter using one lane and exit using the other lane. The contractor will have a site superintendent on duty who will manage the temporary traffic pattern for vehicles and pedestrians. Signage, construction cones, and a flagman will assist vehicle drivers and pedestrians to safely enter and exit the East Garage on Fenton Street.

2. There will be a period of time when the sidewalk adjacent to the East Garage along King Street and along Fenton Street will be closed. Signage will direct pedestrians to cross at the Burlington Avenue cross walk to the other side of the street to continue their walk to/from the campus.

Campus Facilities and Public Safety will be in continuous contact with the site superintendent to ensure pedestrian safety during construction. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact either James Sharpe, Public Safety Manager, at (240) 567-1603 or james.sharpe@montgomerycollege.edu and/or Carlos Castillo, Plant Maintenance and Operations Manager, at (240) 567-1568 or carlos.castillo@montgomerycollege.edu.

* When completed, the Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT) will be an 8-mile trail that runs from Union Station in the District of Columbia to Silver Spring in Maryland. Following the Metropolitan Branch Line of the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad, the trail passes through numerous vibrant and historic neighborhoods as well as connecting to the National Mall. The MBT is an important transportation route providing connections to homes, work and play as well as access to seven Metro stations. Current plans include connections to the area's trail network such as the Capital Crescent Trail, Anacostia Trails System, and integration into the East Coast Greenway.

Thank you for your patience.
