On Friday, November 3, 2017, TRiO staff and students presented at the Maryland Community College Chief Student Affairs Officers (MCCCSAO) Best Practices Showcase held at Frederick Community College. The subject of the conference was "Student Affairs Perspective for Guided Pathways." TRiO's topic was "Serving Hard-to-Reach Students."
TRiO's session focused on strategies for recruiting, understanding and serving hard-to-reach students. These students are traditionally underrepresented in postsecondary education- first-generation and low-income college students, students with disabilities, students who are limited English proficient, and other disconnected students. TRiO students shared their academic journey at Montgomery College.
After the presentation, the participants had a better understanding of the challenges that hard-to-reach students face and learned strategies to serve these students effectively. Participants shared their expertise and gave constructive feedback. Participants praised students for their courage, and perseverance, and motivated students to continue their journey. Students reported that it was an enjoyable learning experience and that they had the opportunity to network with college officials from other community colleges.
