On Saturday November 11, Montgomery College hosted 53 middle school girls for Sonya Kovalevsky Day, a one-day conference to introduce middle school girls to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

This event was sponsored through a generous grant from AFCEA Bethesda, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that encourages dialogue and partnership between the federal government and industry to solve today's most critical IT challenges.

The conference opened with a game of bingo using STEM related terms and definitions. After the introduction, the girls rotated through several activities: Robotics by Dr. Jan Plane from University of Maryland, Chemistry Experiments by Dr. Rachel Ndonye & Dr. Sripriya Seetharaman, and DNA Explorations by Dr. Leah Allen & Dr. Sara Kalifa. Each of these presenters did an amazing job engaging the girls in the activities. These women were the true stars of the day!

During lunch, a current computer engineering major from University of Maryland held an engaging and interactive discussion on internet safety. Thank you to Katherine from UMD for the lively discussion!

Each girl received a t-shirt, a bag, and many STEM related gifts as well as a science project to complete at home.
We received several comments from participants who were impressed with the program. Below are some quotes:
"This was interesting, educational & epic!!! I love how we really participated in each activity & that it wasn't just sitting down & watching a teacher! I LOVED IT"
"I learned about why they held this. I learned a lot about Robotics and all about DNA. I also learned about how you should be safe on the internet and about chemistry. I had a fun time and loved all the activities! Nice goodie bags"

"I thought that it was a great program because it made me interested in the STEM field."

"This day was awesome. I got to do a lot of stuff I never thought I would do."

"I had tons of fun. I wish that this happened much more often."

"I learned how to program a robot (which was pretty cool), extract DNA (fascinating), and how to make slime (fun). I also learned about the importance of a strong password."
