On Friday, November 10th, 2017, The MC Chapter of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges (MC-AAWCC) had an official installation ceremony of the chapter and the inaugural members. Invited guests were Dr. Pollard, president of the AAWCCC national organization, and Dr. Okema Bowers from Tidewater Community College, who serves as director of Region II, of which MC is a part.

During her remarks, Dr. Pollard reminded attendees about the void community colleges fill and the important work they do in uplifting students, families, and communities. Community colleges enroll almost 50% of all college students, and almost 50% of students enrolled in college are women. These figures highlight the importance of encouraging women students and employees in community colleges to share their stories, to have their voices heard, and to live their lives with intention; to make an impact.

Dr. Bowers facilitated the ceremony, where the chapter officers were charged to:

Support the vision, mission and goals of the chapter

Promote the education, employment and well-being of women in community colleges

Serve as advocates for all women's needs and interests on campus

Carry out projects and activities that will help MC women grow and learn

Celebrate the accomplishments of women at the college, in the state, and in community colleges around the country

The installation ceremony was followed by the MC-AAWCC chapter meeting, which featured Shawn Harrison, Director of MC Public Safety and Emergency Management as the guest "hidden gems" speaker. Director Harrison spoke about her journey, the mentors and challenges she encountered along the way, as well as her intention to share what she has learned with others.

"Hidden Gems" is a new feature of MC-AAWCC, where women at all levels of the college are invited to share their personal stories and experiences to inspire and motivate members along their professional and personal journeys. If you would like to speak to the chapter as a "hidden gem" or want to recommend someone else to speak to the chapter, please contact one of the campus liaisons listed below.
