During the past two years, the English and Reading department at Rockville hosted a fall Open House. Held in either the Science Center or the Faculty/Staff Dining Room, this event gave students the chance to enjoy sweet treats while milling around and talking with professors about literature, composition, distance learning, and the myriad courses offered in English and Reading.

This year, the English and Reading department took a different tactic: bring an Open House to the students.

Faculty volunteers set up tables in Campus Center on one November day, talking to students as they came and went from the cafeteria. They repeated the Open House event in the Macklin Tower lobby the next day, talking to students as they came and went from the library. English and Reading faculty and staff provided cola floats and course fliers to interested students. Those who stopped by the tables received MC goodies, including flash drives, pens, and fidget spinners.

English and Reading department faculty and staff loved this approach to reaching out to students. On both days, students dropped by the English and Reading department office to ask additional questions and seek help from friendly staff. Open House that meets students where they are? Now that's embedded support.
