On Friday, December 1, 2017, TRiO staff and students presented at the 8th Annual Summit on Completion hosted by the Maryland Association of Community Colleges (MACC).

TRiO's workshop was a panel discussion that focused on serving underrepresented community college students. Jamal Emiabata, Stephanie Sanepour, Matthew Sulio and Futsum Tekle shared their struggles as college students. Huong Nguyen facilitated the discussion. Students spoke highly of Montgomery College and shared their positive experiences. The students also reported their challenges which included financial, food insecurity, transportation, having a safe place to stay, and balancing school with jobs and family. Students also indicated that they were not prepared for college-level work and felt lost when they arrived at the college.

Participants revealed that they are aware of the problems of food insecurity, homelessness, and other issues, which have grown as more nontraditional, low-income, first-generation students arrive at their campuses. Participants shared many strategies that their colleges use to address such issues. Students received praise from participants for having the courage to share their stories. They also informed staff that it was a thought-provoking experience to publicly share their challenges and that having an attentive, understanding audience who undoubtedly wanted to take action on the issues presented meant a great deal to them.

After the event, staff and students went to the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore. Students learned how science interacts with everyday life and enjoyed the exhibitions that gave them a glimpse of different areas of science.
