In celebration, Montgomery College joins local school systems and community colleges across the State to celebrate CTE Month and shine a spotlight on the success of CTE students. In fall 2017, 4,659 MC students were enrolled in technical programs, representing just over 20% of the total College population. The College's annual Perkins Grant, a federal via State grant, provides approximately $420,000 annually to support more than 40 credit CTE programs, ranging from Accounting to Web Programming.
MC continues to benefit from the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2006 ("Perkins") and Maryland's State Perkins Plan. Perkin's allows credit CTE students to achieve challenging academic and technical standards and prepare for high-skill, high-wage, or high-demand occupations in current and emerging professions. Perkins provides an increased focus on the academic achievement of CTE students, strengthens state and local accountability, and reinforces the connection between secondary and postsecondary education through CTE Programs of Study (POS).
Focus on Computer Gaming & Simulation: One example of a successful CTE POS is MC's Computer Gaming & Simulation Program (see photo), which has received Perkins funds for program improvement in the past few years. The Computer Gaming & Simulation degree and certificate programs introduce students to the skills needed for the emerging technology area of game and simulation development. Completion of this degree exposes students to core game development skills and theory, gaming and computer simulation technology applications, programming, animation and computer graphics technology. Electives allow students an opportunity to further explore their area of interest, such as programming, 3D modeling, motion capture, web and database development, mobile games, and other topics. The recently redesigned certificate closely tracks the degree program, so students can earn the certificate as a "stackable credential" before finishing the degree.
Students may transfer the gaming degree to complete a bachelor's degree in gaming and simulation at the University of Baltimore (UB). MC signed an articulation agreement with UB to ensure seamless transfer and UB's gaming degree is offered nearby at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG).
During their time at MC, students are exposed to a variety of events to familiarize them with the UB program and USG campus. To list just a few examples: UB speakers visit MC introductory gaming classes every semester; MC professors advise students about transfer requirements and scholarships; MC students and graduates participate in the international Global Game Jam (held at USG) each January; and MC professors take students on field trips to hear game industry speakers at USG. The program also has articulation agreements with MCPS that allow high school students to receive college credit for key introductory courses in the gaming degree that they take while in high school (TECH 272 - Web Development, TECH 190 - Intro to Gaming and Simulation, and CMSC 140 - Programming). Students who successfully complete those three classes in high school have the advantage to enter MC with 11 credits completed towards their MC gaming degree.
In addition to providing funds for program improvement, Perkins funds created a successful Learning Community (LC), combining two key courses, TECH 190 with CMSC 140. In this new LC, students learn about game development and introductory programming in the context of 2D games. This LC has run with full academic year enrollment for four semesters now and is proving to be a great way for students to master both programming and game development for 2D games.
Students in the program have won nationally recognized awards. Recently, for example, the Montgomery County Council recognized gaming students who won first place in the national "Climate Game Jam" contest. The Council issued a county proclamation in honor of these students on September 19, 2017. <p>Join the <a href="https://www.montgomerycollege.edu/events/asian-pacific-heritage/" target="_blank">MC Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander</a> (AANHPI) Book Club this fall as we dive into Yoko Ogawa's <em>The Memory Police</em>, a captivating dystopian novel about the horrors of state surveillance from one of Japan's most notable writers. Hailed by<em> <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/aug/23/the-memory-police-yoko-ogawa-review" target="_blank">The Guardian</a></em> as, "a masterpiece, meditating on totalitarianism and resistance as well as the rhythms of life and death,"<em> The Memory Police</em> will spark rich discussions on the themes of memory, loss, and individual autonomy.</p>
<p>Our first meeting will take place in late September. Those interested in joining the Book Club can e-mail Yvonne Hu-Cotto, Michelle Chan, and/or Nghi Nguyen. The Zoom meeting link will be provided as a calendar invite.</p>

<p data-ccp-border-top="0px none " data-ccp-padding-top="0px">The <strong>AANHPI Book Club</strong> reads books written by Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) authors. The AANHPI experience is a living, breathing, and evolving culture that deserves its own study. We will learn, understand, and attempt to define the AANHPI experience through the reading and discussions of these books.</p>
<p>Previous selections include<em> Pachinko</em> by Min Jin Lee (FA25) and<em> My Year Abroad</em> by Chang Rae-Lee (SP26).</p>

The workshop will focus on RegisterBlast, the platform faculty will use to submit, edit, and retrieve their tests and students will use to make their testing appointments. Tips will be shared to facilitate a seamless testing process and a positive experience for faculty and students. Staff will be ready to answer questions from individual faculty members.
