Banner 9 Upgrade

Category: Need to Know

Published: 2018-02-26 00:00:01.000

What is the Banner Upgrade?

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is preparing to upgrade Banner, our student information system of record, to the most current version of the product. The upgrade, known as Banner 9, is an incremental update to the core Banner system.

Please note that this upgrade is not part of the Workday project. Workday is not replacing the Banner student information system. Banner is our student information system while Workday will be the College's new information system for human resources, payroll, and financial management services.

The initial phase of this upgrade will introduce redesigned web based Banner screens. In addition to a new look and feel, Banner 9 will provide a number of important enhancements including a modern user interface, enhanced navigation, new functionality, and the ability to run on any web browser.

The upgrade, necessary because underlying Banner 8 technology is being phased out by the vendor, ensures that MC maintains adherence to regulatory and software updates when support for Banner 8 is terminated by the vendor as of December 2018.

What will change?

The Banner upgrade will give MC the opportunity to utilize a modern web design with intuitive navigation. Most of the feedback other institutions have provided indicates that getting used to the new interface and navigation takes minimal effort. Also changing is how Banner will be accessed. In the past, users have accessed the system by two different methods: Desktop Banner, accessed through a desktop icon, and Self Service Banner, accessed via MyMC. Once the Banner 9 Upgrade is complete, everyone will access Banner through MyMC.

What will stay the same?

While this upgrade is a major project, the inner workings of the core system and all current processes and procedures will remain unchanged. Navigation training will be available collegewide beginning in April 2018.

When will the change occur?

The Banner 9 upgrade is scheduled to take place in early June 2018. While the upgrade will necessitate a system downtime, OIT is working with all appropriate stakeholders to ensure minimal impact to the College community. Please visit the Banner 9 Upgrade website to learn more about the project, view training schedules, videos, and manuals, and submit any feedback.

If you have specific questions concerning this Banner upgrade, please contact the Banner 9 Upgrade Team at you.
