From: Rockville Facilities Help Desk

Subject: Sidewalk closure - Campus Center Building Project

Date: March 6, 2024

We would like to provide the community with a campus update. Beginning Friday, March 8, 2024, there will be construction on the sidewalk located at the southwest side of the Campus Center building. As a result, the southwest doors will be temporarily closed. There is a northwest door entrance available for access to the building. Signage will be posted to help guide pedestrians safely. This sidewalk closure does not impact any ADA accessible pathways. The construction is expected to last until March 15, 2024. Please see the campus map below that shows the closed area in red.

The Rockville Campus is under an aggressive state of improvement. Once employees clicked the link, the attack unfolded as follows:

A fake MyMC login page was displayed that prompted employees to enter their MyMC ID and password.

Employees were then presented with a fake Duo Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) prompt where they were asked for a Duo Mobile passcode.

The attacker used the one-time passcode to access the Duo Mobile Device Portal to add their phone to the employee's 2FA account. This granted the attacker access to the employee's MyMC ID information that was then used to access the employee's Workday account. With this access the attacker then changed the employee's direct deposit accounts in an effort to divert and steal the employee's paycheck.

THE GOOD NEWS: IT Security successfully intercepted this attack and no direct deposit account changes were processed.

THE BAD NEWS: Several employees clicked the link and potentially provided their personal information to the attacker. If you clicked the link, and were not contacted by IT Security, please notify the IT Service Desk immediately to report your encounter and receive guidance about how to protect your account.

It is critical that we all remain vigilant, staying alert and reporting suspicious or out of the ordinary emails. For example, users reported that the fake MyMC login page and Duo prompt appeared "different." Remember, if it seems PHISHY, it probably is PHISHY. Please take the time to review the sending email address, content, and nature of the request before clicking.

Please use the Report phishing button to REPORT suspicious emails and let IT Security analyze it for you.

As always, the IT Service Desk is available to address any technology-related questions or issues.
Need to Know01150180Monday, March 18, 2024emailArticle.php?articleToEmail=118441details.php?id=118441&title=Direct_Deposit_SCAM_ALERT31fbe123-bbae-4074-998b-9f60006b9c7c1184552024-03-18 00:00:01.000chris cusicMC Foundation Innovation Grant Fund Submission Deadline Is March 19
MC Foundation Innovation Grant Fund Information:

In keeping with the exhibition's theme surrounding presence and virtuality, King Street Gallery will feature South Korean artists, while faculty and staff of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, will simultaneously exhibit at CICA Museum. The exhibition at King Street Gallery will run from March 18, 2024, to April 19, 2024, with an opening reception and artist talks to be held on Thursday, March 21, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Attendance is free and open to the public.

Even prior to the pandemic of 2020, human civilization had become increasingly and intimately tethered to the Network, a condition of perpetual digital/remote/virtual connection, carrying smartphones on bodies in a form of latent cyborgism, and immersing in representations and performativity of self via social media networks and other technologies. While day to day sociality, business, and politics blurred the boundaries between an offline and online experience (postinternet), creating a global, extended telepresence, the media also proliferated video clips, captured by smartphone users, of the murder of POC, including Eric Garner, who's last agonizing final moments, pleas of "I can't breathe," were heard throughout the world. Meanwhile, later, during the early wave of the pandemic, throughout the world nurses held up smart phones so one could say a final goodbye to their ventilated, sick loved ones who were unable to breathe and forced to die "alone-together". Both are instances of the complex interaction and relationship between the body, presence, tech, and mortality. Is the body disappearing or reappearing; is it something in between or wholly new?
King Street Gallery at Montgomery College Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus presents: NEWBODIES/NOBODIES, a cultural exchange/international synchronous group exhibition in conjunction with CICA Museum, South Korea. In keeping with the exhibition's theme surrounding presence and virtuality, King Street Gallery will feature South Korean artists, while faculty and staff of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, will simultaneously exhibit at CICA Museum. The exhibition at King Street Gallery will run from March 18, 2024, to April 19, 2024, with an opening reception and artist talks to be held on Thursday, March 21st, from 11am - 1 pm.

This tension is palpable. In the Age of Pandemic and Network, the body is potentially resurrected, reconsidered, and/or reconstructed. NEWBODIES/NOBODIES features work that attempts to explore, imagine and critique a new figuration, a new-body (virtual, cyborg, queer), body-politic, or a no-body (nobody), COVID-body, body-horror, cyberspace, and transhumanism, as well as animal bodies and the natural/unnatural world(s) from the perspective of Korean and U.S. artists.

On the first day, the math faculties, Prof. Rachel Saidi and Prof. Sandra Rosenberg presented data science and math activities, respectively. The students engaged in exploring 'the penguin data set' and 'counting numbers'. On the second day of the cohort, Prof. Monica Mellini and her engineering students facilitated the mashmallow challenge activity. In the robotics activity, students learned how to program and move robots in specific directions. This was led by the outreach coordinator, Charlotte Avery, and the undergraduate students at the University of Maryland's Iribe Center for Computer Science and Engineering. Mad Science of Washington, DC, did two chemistry activities during which students learned to make slime and the properties of dry ice. All students received a T-shirt, and a bag with the SK program logo, the card game Sleeping Queens (which was invented by a six-year-old girl named Miranda Evarts), and a set of math dice. Participants also received many prizes through name draws. Thank you to AFCEA Bethesda for the continued support. Thank you to everyone else who contributed to the program's success.
2SonyaKovaleckyWinterCohort.gifattach/c00cda8a-de44-5564-fd84-e754f31c8926/SonyaKovaleckyWinterCohort.giftn_0.gifattach/c00cda8a-de44-5564-fd84-e754f31c8926/tn_0.gifIMG_0296.jpgattach/c00cda8a-de44-5564-fd84-e754f31c8926/IMG_0296.jpgtn_1.jpgattach/c00cda8a-de44-5564-fd84-e754f31c8926/tn_1.jpgdi_0.gifattach/c00cda8a-de44-5564-fd84-e754f31c8926/di_0.gifCollege News01800110Monday, March 18, 2024emailArticle.php?articleToEmail=118403details.php?id=118403&title=Sonya_Kovalevsky_Winter_Cohort_202415136067-62ca-4284-49ff-068b554470cc1182442024-03-18 00:00:01.000Tilandra RhyneAll Are Invited to the Launch of the Dear Younger Me Installation: An Immersive Experience
The Montgomery College Community is invited to embark on a transformative journey with "Dear Younger Me: Healing the Inner Black Girl" a collaborative project uniting voices from Kingsborough Community College, CUNY, Virginia Tech's Institute for Creativity, Arts & Technology, and Montgomery College.
What to expect from a Racial Healing Circle:A group of 10-20 diverse individuals from the College will meet for one and a half to two hours to go through a series of activities that help us get to know each other better. The idea is that if we know each other better as individuals, we break down the hierarchy of who is important and who is not (hierarchy of human value). By knowing each other better, we are better positioned to tackle the important policies, practices, and narratives that are barriers to fulfilling the mission of the College.About the MC TRHT Campus Center:Montgomery College is one of more than 70 higher education institutions across the country with a Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT) Campus Center, which is an initiative of the American Association of Colleges & Universities (AAC&U). MC's TRHT Campus Center aims to provide community healing activities that promote narrative change in order to dismantle the belief in a hierarchy of human values and to prepare the next generation of leaders to advocate for racial and social justice.
Before it became fashionable in education circles, part-time faculty member Mark Wellman was already making his mark in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) field. Wellman worked as an engineer for 17 years and spent the last 10 of those years as both a scientist and engineer. However, he switched careers and decided he wanted to teach.

Wellman teaches several introductory math courses on the Germantown campus. He joined the College 13 years ago. He also has taught statistics at American University and math and astronomy classes at Frederick Community College.

He has spent most of his life in Maryland. He graduated from what was then Robert E. Peary High School in Rockville in 1972 and while he loved science growing up, his passion for math developed when he was a senior in high school.

"I entered the math education field primarily due to my 12th grade teacher in high school, Mr. Jacobs. He was very influential in my academic career," Wellman said.

While Wellman enjoyed math, he decided to major in Microbiology when he attended the University of Maryland as an undergraduate. He graduated in 1976. A dozen years after he graduated, he earned a second degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Maryland. He later received his master's degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Maryland, and then he attended Johns Hopkins University where he earned a Masters of Arts degree in teaching in 2006.

Wellman said he was always involved in education even when he was working as an engineer and scientist.

"I decided to retire early and pursue education. Teaching gives me a chance to share the extensive knowledge I have developed over the years. It was working with chess students that really pushed me into education," Wellman said.

He became interested in chess as a young child. He would play with his father and two older brothers. When he was in high school he would routinely beat the champion of the high school chess club. Around the same time, world chess champion, Bobby Fischer, was making a name for himself, and Wellman began to study chess more closely. When Wellman had a son, he taught him chess. His son learned the game at a very young age and was able to play before he turned four years old. Wellman later had the opportunity to run a children's chess club.

"I jumped at it. It was very rewarding and that gave me the 'bug' for education," Wellman said.

Besides his interest in chess, Wellman also learned to play guitar as a teenager. He started taking music lessons when he was 13 or 14 years old. Playing music and chess, combined with the love he developed for math seemed to fit well together.

"The connections between music, math, and chess are each has creative aspects within a certain rule set. Your imagination can be explored within these areas. They are entertaining to a developing mind," Wellman said.

Wellman's varied interests and his background in engineering help when he is in the classroom teaching his students math. He wants his students to know how important math is in their lives.

"I enjoy seeing students comprehend the power of mathematics and science," he explained. "Students are unaware of how much mathematics impacts them and I try to reveal that fact," he added.

He has experienced many positive moments in the classroom. Wellman said his favorites are when students suddenly realize the power of mathematics and when students develop their own strategies for success.

He hopes students who take his classes become proficient in math. He also wants his students to be less concerned about grades and instead focus on mastering these important life-long skills.

He said he has developed a teaching philosophy over the years and he encourages other part-time faculty members who teach math to streamline homework assignments.

"Assign no more than 12 to 18 problems per homework. Keep the homework assignments to 30-45 minutes. Model for your students how to solve problems," Wellman said.

He also has observed students in community college need more leniencies with deadlines because they usually have many different responsibilities outside of class unlike many students who attend a four-year college.

When Wellman is not teaching math, he is busy giving people guitar lessons. Wellman wrote a guitar theory book and has begun work on a second one. His first book is called 'Harmony Fragments for Guitar Improvisation,' and people can find it on eBay. Readers can learn a novel approach to improvising on the guitar.

Wellman also still enjoys playing chess and spending time outdoors in his free time.
