This year marks the 10th anniversary of the three campus celebration of International Peace Day which is observed all over the world in September. Rain moved our event to October 10, but we're happy to be celebrating again. Join us Wednesday at noon!

Ten years ago, the three campus Peace and Justice Studies Community asked the campuses to have pick-up games of soccer, a very universal sport, to celebrate International Peace Day. Such an event occurred on the Germantown Campus.

The first year that Dr. Rai was the Provost on the Germantown Campus, he played goalie! As he surveyed the diversity of players on the field, he remarked at the end of the pick-up games, "This is what Montgomery College is all about." Last year, students from 62 countries played for 20 min. periods.

Also in terms of this event, funds from the faculty were given to the Montgomery College Foundation in honor of Phil McClean, deceased in 2007, who taught Math on the Germantown Campus. These funds helped establish International Peace Day pick-up soccer games.

The time is noon to 4 p.m. (near the Baseball Field). Short introductory speeches, around 1 or 1:15, will be given by Dr. Rai, Provost Margaret Latimer, and Professors Darren Smith and Benedict Ngala. I have also invited Dr. Cain. Two years ago, we were honored by Dr. Pollard's presence.

Our professional referee, Michael Greenwood, will be there from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Mr. Greenwood has been with us for eight of our ten years. He is outstanding. The Germantown Provost, Dr. Rai, the Dean of Students, Student Life and one other dept. of the Germantown Campus as well the the 3 Campus Peace and Justice Studies Community help us with expenses like pizza and Pepsi and water and ice drinks, soccer balls, professional signs and referee fees.

The men and women's soccer teams from the Rockville Campus join us mid afternoon. So thanks to Coaches Trey Livingston and Philip Nana for supporting this great event. Thanks to an invitation by Coach Nana, I was privileged to visit the Rockville Campus to meet the Women's soccer team and invite them to participate in the pick-ups games as they have done in the past.

It has been a privilege for me to teach English Part time for 18 years at Montgomery College.

Prof. Sally McClean
