Category: Professional Development

Published: Nov 5 2018 12:00AM

November 28, 2018 is the first ever global celebration of World Access to Higher Education Day (WAHED). World Access to Higher Education Day is "a platform to raise global awareness around inequalities in access and success in Higher Education, and act as a catalyst for international, regional and local action." (https://worldaccesshe.com/)

To mark the day, the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice and the President's Advisory Committee on Equity and Inclusion (PACEI) will host a dialogue that gives a central voice to MC students. The panelists will reflect the diversity of Montgomery College and discuss the college-wide efforts to enhance access to higher education in the county. This event will allow MC students to contribute to this global celebration by giving voice to their unique experiences at the college.

This event invites students, faculty, and staff, and wider community members to come and engage in this dialogue. What does "radical inclusion" mean in practice?

*Student panelists will provide insight into their individual trajectories at the college and provide their perspective on key MC initiatives that relate to greater equity and access in higher education.

*Students will also discuss the value that accessing higher education brings to their lives and how being at MC is contributing to their future goals.

This event connects the teaching and work of faculty and staff to the Academic Master Plan Academic Affairs Initiatives, by giving them an opportunity to hear directly from students about their first-hand experiences with equity-related policies and initiatives. Community members are invited to join us in connecting with the student experience at MC.

This event connects participants, and the wider college, to global education initiatives, providing all of us the chance to be a part of this global dialogue. On the day, we will join this global movement with the hashtag #WAHED2018.

After attending this event, students, faculty and staff will be able to:

*Discuss the diverse student experiences at Montgomery College
*Explain how the academic master plan and academic affairs initiatives translate to students
*Summarize how MC initiatives relate to wider global initiatives and community efforts
