First published in 1779 by Ephraim Lessing, Nathan the Wise is an appeal for religious tolerance. Forbidden by the Church during Lessing's lifetime, it was first performed in 1783 in the Dbbelinsches Theatre in Berlin. Set during the Third Crusade in Jerusalem, the play illustrates how the wise Jewish merchant Nathan, the enlightened sultan Saladin, and the (previously anonymous) Templar bridge their gaps between Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Nathan the Wise is a moralistic work that preaches a message of harmony and tolerance among all religions.
