Subject: Procedures for Delayed Opening or Closure of College Facilities for Inclement Weather

Local weather forecasts are predicting a cold and snowy winter for the DC-metro area. That's why it's important to remind the College community of the options available to get the latest information on closings or delays due to inclement weather, or other emergency situations. Please retain this information for reference.

MC Alert and Other Ways We Communicate Closings and Delays
MC students and employees are automatically subscribed to MC Alert via their MyMC login. The default delivery method is a student or employee email issued by the College. The College strongly encourages students and employees to register to receive MC Alert text messages to your cell phones and emails to your non-MC accounts. If you have not already done so, visit the MC Alert page here and click on the MC Alert icon to update your information.

Other than text and email, notices about closings and delays are communicated via:
MC webpage
Local television and radio stations including MCTV
College voicemail

How to Interpret Delayed Opening Information
If the College experiences a delayed opening, all facilities and buildings (including parking lots and parking garages) will be open for general occupancy 30 minutes prior to the beginning of delayed opening announcement times. As an example, if the College announces a delayed opening until 10 a.m., campus facilities and buildings will be unlocked and available at 9:30 a.m. on that day.

If the College opening is delayed by more than half the time of your class, do not report to class. Example: If class meets on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., and the College opens at 11 a.m., come to class for the remaining 1.5 hours. If the opening is delayed until noon for that example, do not report to class for the remaining 30 minutes.

Who Is Authorized to Be on Campus During Closings and Delays?
When the College is officially closed or the opening of the College is delayed, non-essential employees are not authorized to be on the campus due to safety concerns. Only essential personnel are permitted on College campuses during periods of closure. Essential personnel is defined as: (1) Personnel required to ensure campus buildings and grounds are operational and secure; and (2) Personnel required for monitoring and communicating the operational status of the College. This restriction is in place for the protection of our students and employees. If the College is closed, it is deemed not safe for other than essential personnel. Essential personnel, including our public safety officers, are involved in operational needs to get the campuses open and safe. They are unable to provide full attention to the safety and security of students and employees during these times.

How the College Makes a Decision to Close or Delay for Weather
Decisions to close the College or delay opening are made by the senior vice president for administrative and fiscal services. These decisions are made in consultation with key central services administrators and campus facilities directors.

If a decision is made to close the College for the entire day, every attempt will be made to communicate the decision by 5 a.m. If no announcement is made, assume the College is open.

Be advised, there may be additional status announcements if changing weather conditions warrant, such as a further delay or a complete closing.
