Experiential Education in the College Context: What it is, How it Works, and Why it Matters. This presentation will explore how university faculty and staff from across the institution can use a variety of experiential learning methodologies to increase student engagement, strengthen learning, enhance career readiness, and build connections and capacity in the community. Setting the context for the discussion, we will explore how and why experiential education has grown in its presence and influence in higher education over the last two decades--both inside and outside the formal curriculum. Four central methodologies of experiential education will be defined and discussed using practical examples from a range of institutional contexts. We will consider what the research suggests in terms of the impact and effectiveness of experiential learning as well as some of the common pitfalls and misconceptions about the field. Finally, we will detail what we are learning about how best to increase opportunities for experiential learning across the curriculum and co-curriculum including implementation strategies and approaches at classroom, program, and institutional scales.

Learning Outcomes:

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will:

Understand definitions and key concepts regarding experiential education as applied in higher education

Be able to identify four methodologies of experiential learning with examples

Understand design parameters, best practices, and recognize common pitfalls regarding experiential pedagogy

Discuss how to increase opportunities for experiential learning at different scales (classroom, program, institution)

We are a part of a service-learning group called Impact MC, and we are hosting an informative presentation with three speakers from the Department of Environmental Protection who will be speaking on how to best reduce three kinds of waste: trash, food and energy, and how it won't only help the environment but also save you money! Our event day is Wednesday April 17, 2024 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Rockville Campus Science Center in room 152. Our speakers will be providing participants with eco-friendly goodies like power-saving LED bulbs, power strips and more!

Impact MC helps students develop valuable skills by having them work in teams to design and implement service, awareness and advocacy centered projects related to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals. Our development goal is Climate Action, and we hope to reach out to Montgomery County Residents through this presentation to show them that going green doesn't need to be expensive or difficult. Please come support our student led project, and hopefully learn something new!
