In the U.S. measles can spread due to travelers who were infected while visiting places where measles is still common, and in pockets of unvaccinated communities. This reminds us all that as we travel abroad this summer, it is important to check health advisories, and get immunized against diseases that are common to the region we travel to. Many diseases are uncommon in the United States, but prevalent in other countries and regions of the World. Vaccination (MMR vaccine) is still the best way to protect yourself against highly contagious diseases like measles. Most health insurance plans cover vaccines at no cost. Check with your insurance provider to make sure. There may be state or local programs that can provide immunization services for vulnerable populations, such as children, elderly, and pregnant women. Measles is caused by a virus, which can remain viable in the air for up to 2 hours after an infectious person has sneezed or coughed. A person who has measles can be infectious up to 4 days before, and 4 days after the onset of the characteristic rash. Initial symptoms may not be enough to alert the person that they have measles, and only a laboratory test can confirm the suspected measles diagnosis. The Centers for Disease Control's web site provides this note about measles: Measles starts with fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes, and sore throat. It's followed by a rash that spreads over the body. Measles is highly contagious and spreads through coughing and sneezing. Make sure you and your child are protected with measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. The Maryland Department of Health issues notifications of time periods and addresses where a potentially infectious person was present before being diagnosed with measles. Infection control is a high priority for health department professionals who track the spread of the disease and the persons who may have come in contact with an infectious individual. We can all help the professionals by following their instructions and advice that is distributed through official statements and fact sheets. TPSS kicked off the week by welcoming 86 new students to campus on Monday, August 10, followed by the Germantown campus welcoming 131 new students on Tuesday, August 11. Rockville wrapped up the week by welcoming 200+ new students on Thursday, August 13. Welcome Day focused on building community, creating a sense of belonging, and providing new students with the tools they'll need for success at MC and beyond. The event was packed with campus tours, Resource Fairs, Counseling & Advising wisdom, meetings with department heads, Rita's Ices, and Monty. Because every new Raptor needs to meet THE Raptor! While Welcome Day was the biggest New Student Orientation event of the summer, it certainly wasn't the last.
