MC Chemistry Faculty Present on Humanizing Science for Student Success at ACS Regional Meeting

<p>Several members of the MC Chemistry Discipline participated in the symposium <i>Humanizing Science: The Key Roles of Mentoring and Building Community</i> at the American Chemical Society's 47th Middle Atlantic Regional Meeting hosted at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) on June 1, 2019.</p>
<p><b>Ester Sesmero</b> (PT chemistry faculty) facilitated the symposium which included oral presentations by <b>Carolyn Schick</b> (MC Learning Assistant Program Director) and <b>Virginia Miller</b> (FT chemistry faculty) as well as a panel discussion featuring <b>Laura Anna</b> (RV Chemistry Department Chair).</p>
<p>During her opening discussion, <i>Creating a Motivating Environment in Your Class: The Courage of Vulnerability</i>, Ester shared tips and techniques for establishing a positive classroom climate where students feel welcome and supported. Carolyn's presentation, <i>Building Community and Growing Success in Chemistry Through a Learning Assistant Program</i>, focused on how MC's nationally-recognized Learning Assistant (LA) program supports student LAs in their personal and professional growth as they serve as peer-models working to increase learning engagement, community support, and academic success in LA-supported STEM classes. Virginia followed with the talk, <i>The Role of Strong Faculty Mentorship in the Development of Effective Learning Assistants in Chemistry Courses</i>, as she discussed how faculty mentors in the Learning Assistant program provide critical guidance ensuring that LAs are productively integrated into the classroom community.</p>
<p>The symposium concluded with an engaging panel discussion in which Laura highlighted MC's strategies for supporting students' success and encouraging a sense of belonging at the College.</p>
