Stephanie Mercedes is the Fall 2019 Artist in Residence in the Rockville and Germantown Art Department. She uses weapons confiscated and deactivated by the D.C. police, melts down the metal, and transforms it into musical installations and instruments. The intention of her work is to take the materiality of violence and turn it into its opposite: art.

During her residency, Mercedes will guide Rockville art students in a collaborative project in which she melts bullet casings to make traditional school bells. Each bell size will correlate to the number of fatalities from school shootings in the US per year. For example, the year 2018, in which 61 school shooting fatalities occurred, will be represented by a bell made from 61 bullets. Participating students will make bells that collectively represent the history of school shootings in the United States from 1972 to 2018. This project will give students a voice on the current crisis of school shootings in this country. Throughout the process, students will answer the question: When do you feel safe?
