The Department of Visual and Performing Arts invite you to the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus to view work by artist Liza Wimbish.

About the Series:

This is the 1st show of the 2019/2020 themed exhibition series, Self, which invites artists to explore contemporary ideas of Self Portraiture by engaging with the self through either representational or conceptual means.

The Open Gallery presents Oscillating, featuring the work of Liza Wimbish from September 25 - November 1, 2019. Exploring themes of personal identity through photography, Liza Wimbish's work reflects the ambiguity of coming of age and the inevitable haziness of the future that occurs when one embarks on a new phase of life. The mysterious nature of Wimbish's work alludes to the starkly different emotions that come to fruition at times of change. All seemingly abstract in nature, her works of self portraiture reflect a feeling, fear, or reservation that accompanies internal evolution. Overarchingly speaking to questions in regards to personal identity, her work discusses themes of growth and the complexities of what it means to discover yourself.

About the Artist

Liza Wimbish is an artist born in Richmond, VA focusing primarily in photography and mixed media work. Her work has been exhibited nationally in Miami, New York City, Richmond, and other cities across the country. Specifically, her work has been on view at Parsons School of Design, The School of Visual Arts, The Colorado Photographic Arts Center, The Griffin Museum of Photography, and the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. Wimbish's work deals with exploring her own identity and navigating her role within her family through unconventional self portraiture, documentary style photographs, and materialistic mixed media work.
