On October 27, 2019, two Montgomery College nursing faculty and 12 nursing students reported for duty in the medical tents at the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. The group was divided between Aid Stations 9 (at mile 22) and 10 (at mile 24). The students were directly involved in hands-on, lifesaving treatment for hyperthermia patients. This pathology of hyperthermia in elite athletes is unique to this patient care area, and an unforgettable experience. The ability to mitigate stress and fear when providing nursing care to a human who is 108F is a badge of courage for these MC Nursing students. The students monitored patients with fluid volume deficit, electrolyte imbalances, gastrointestinal disturbances, and changes in mental status...all the while employing therapeutic communication techniques to decrease the experienced anxiety of the athlete. The hard work and dedication of this team embody the mission and vision of the Nursing Program. Many thanks to Kristina Weimer, Angelica Batto, Gabriella Rodriguez-Brito, Halley Hatch, Rafael Quiroga, Marc Brown, Jadah Tvardek, Elizabeth Thompson, Shannon White, Jayde Beward, Whitney Bakimli, Madelyn Higgins, Lena Choudhary, JD, RN and Kate Snyder, MS, RN.
