An Dang, MC student and STEM Learning Assistant, was invited to speak at a national panel sponsored by the Learning Assistant (LA) Alliance, based at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The panel was held virtually via Zoom on April 16, 2020. The Alliance brought together eight LAs from across the country for a discussion on "LA and Student Perspectives on Transitioning to Remote Learning." 75 faculty from across the country attended this event. The event was recorded and can be viewed here:

An spoke about her experience this spring in supporting students while being mentored as a Learning Assistant in General Chemistry I at Montgomery College. An spoke with both pride and gratitude for her opportunity to serve as an LA. An highlighted MC's approach in implementing the Learning Assistant model as the college transitioned to remote learning midway through the semester; she discussed how she helped students in the class adjust to remote learning; she talked about the benefits and challenges of remote learning for students at a two-year college; she highlighted MC's initiative of financially supporting students with laptops, and she presented ideas on how to motivate struggling students as an LA.

During MC's remote instruction period, An and the other 36 LAs across the college supported approximately 900 students as they found creative ways to connect with and assist students through Zoom study sessions, text-based apps, as well as continuing their relationship with their faculty mentors as everyone developed new roles in the virtual learning environment. An did a great job at showcasing MC's LA program to the national audience.

The LA program at MC opens up opportunities for students who are considering a career in a STEM field to try on teaching. In its seventh year at Montgomery College, the LA program has been very successful as it provides an additional peer-led learning resource for students in LA-supported classes, leading to increased academic success, as well as providing a unique teaching and mentoring experience for Learning Assistants early in their academic journeys.
