The ceremony, led by program director Amy Crowley, featured congratulatory remarks from Montgomery College and MCPS administrators. "Many of the Gateway staff are working on their own scholarly pursuits, and you are their inspiration." The Gateway to College program at Montgomery College serves at-risk youth, 16 to 20 years old, who stopped attending MCPS and for whom high school completion was at risk. The program gives students the opportunity to earn a high school diploma, while transitioning to a college campus and simultaneously accumulating high school and college credits. "I've gone through a lot of ups and downs, and so have you," Kojo Biney, a Gateway graduate who was selected as the student speaker, told his classmates. Recalling a slogan he saw in an Adidas advertisement, Biney continued, "'Impossible is nothing.' Use this opportunity as a stepping stone to become even better." Biney has already begun taking classes at Towson University where he is majoring in accounting and economics. Lauren Scott and Gal Zeira received $1,000 scholarships for earning the highest grade point averages among the Gateway graduates. Another graduate, Yesenia Cruz-Ramos, recently participated in a Capitol Hill presentation on the promises and challenges of the national Early College High School Initiative. Cruz-Ramos, the first in her family to attend college, has earned 67 college credits and wants to graduate with a paralegal degree from MC and hopes to transfer to Towson. <b>Other Gateway graduates' future plans:</b> - David Catoe has been accepted to Hofstra University in New York. - Julia Burdine, winner of the $8,000 renewable Challenger academic scholarship, will attend Agnes Scott College in Georgia. - John Conner IV will attend Frostburg State University in the fall. - Katelyn Hawkins will continue her education at Upper Iowa University. - Jorge Machuca, after receiving his Associate of Arts in business from MC, will transfer to University of Maryland, University College. - Rachel Rothstein will transfer to the University of Maryland, College Park. Mary Kay Shartle-Galotto, executive vice president for academic and student services, lauded the strong partnership between the College and MCPS, and cited the nation-best 81 percent graduation rate MCPS currently holds. Montgomery College was selected in 2003 as one of the first two institutions in the nation to replicate the success of a groundbreaking Early College High School program pioneered by Portland Community College in Oregon. The Montgomery College "Gateway to College" program began in fall 2004 with approximately 60 students - 20 at each of the College's three campuses. Gateway to College is just one of The Early College High School (E.C.H.S.) models. There are 250 E.C.H.S. programs in operation in U.S. with MC's the only one of its kind in Maryland.
